There are multiple pathways from an Associate’s Degree in Liberal Arts to a career in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.

  • The first is to transfer directly to a Bachelor’s Degree program in a STEM field. Although our math and science requirements for Liberal Arts are built for non-math and non-science majors, you can still take a 4-credit math or science class if that is required by your transfer institution. Work with your faculty advisor to explore your future degree options and requirements; your advisor can submit a course substitution form allowing you to take higher level math and science classes.
  • Another option, which is fairly common among students heading to medical school or going into technology, is to double major at the Bachelor’s level with one major in a Liberal Arts field to gain proficiency in the “soft skills” and one major in your STEM field of choice. People with a double major of biology and English often make excellent doctors due to their empathetic bedside manner and ability to “close read” a patient to gain an accurate diagnosis.
  • Another pathway is to continue with a Bachelor’s Degree in a Liberal Arts field followed by graduate work in STEM; students on this path often take coding or extra math/science courses as part of their BA electives at their transfer institutions.
  • A surprising number of graduates with a BA in a Liberal Arts field go directly to work for STEM companies—including medical and research institutions—in professional writing, consumer relations, marketing, product design, grant-writing, digital communications, training, and consultancy. This is especially true for research in Artificial Intelligence; Liberal Arts graduates are often the “teachers” of the AI technology.
