Philosophy

Philosophy was the first Liberal Art, and today it gives students training in critical thinking, analysis, ethics, and reason that run through all of our L.A. disciplines. Students who move from a Liberal Arts A.A. to a Philosophy B.A. are grounded in skills leading to success in many careers.

To teach philosophy at the high school level, pursue a Philosophy B.A. and teaching certification for secondary school.

Many of those we consider public intellectuals such as pundits, cultural critics, writers, and even comedians and media personalities started with a Philosophy B.A.

Graduates with a B.A. often work as analysts for corporations, banks, and investment or legal firms. They also use their interest in ethics to work in the non-profit sector.

A Philosophy B.A. is also a step toward a Master’s degree in Philosophy, Business, Counseling, or Law:

  • A Philosophy B.A. followed by an MBA (Master’s of Business Administration) is a powerful combination as evidenced by the number of top CEOs who pursued this path.
  • Graduates with a B.A. in Philosophy have the highest rate of acceptance into law school in pursuit of the J. D. (Juris Doctor) required to practice law.
  • Philosophy majors also become counselors, chaplains, social workers, and clergy with advanced study.
  • An M.A. in Philosophy and Ph.D. are required for college or university teaching and scholarship.
