West Windsor, N.J. -- Despite the women’s tennis team’s 3-6 record during the regular season, Head Coach Marc Vecchiolla is very pleased with the progress his young squad made this year. Following a strong showing at the Region 19 Championships, held Oct. 10 and 11 at Rowan College at Gloucester County, Vecchiolla is already looking forward to 2016, when he expects eight players from this year’s ten-member team to return.
In their opening rounds at the Region 19 Championships, Mercer won six of nine matches. The Vikings finished the tournament tied for fourth place with Ocean County College. Mercer and Ocean both had seven points – and were just three points behind third place Northampton. (The top three teams qualify for nationals.)
One of the strongest performances at the tournament came from the 3rd doubles pair of freshmen Christina Davermann (Hamilton, NJ/Hamilton West) and Rachel Desane (Hamilton, NJ/Hamilton West). Davermann and Desane were selected for Second Team All-Region 19 honors, after fiinishing second at that flight.
Singles players were solid throughout the season. Freshman Shelby Casey (Trenton, NJ/Hamilton West) at 2nd singles and Desane at 6th singles each finished with 7-5 records. Freshman Jasmine Clark (Trenton, NJ/Trenton Central) at 3rd singles also had seven wins, finishing 7-4. Two other freshmen showed great promise in the matches they played. Kahmiya Win (Trenton, NJ/Trenton Central) was 3-0 on the year and Gabriela Gates (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) won the 7th singles draw at the eight-team Mercer Invitational held in September.
Vecchiolla was assisted this season by Ralph Bencivengo and Barb Pleva.
