West
Windsor, N.J. -- For the first time in several years, MCCC
women's tennis team will be playing a spring schedule in addition
to their 2010 fall season. Coach Marc Vecchiolla is hoping
to use these additional matches to prepare his team for next
fall and help his first-year players gain more experience.
The season begins tomorrow, Mar. 10, with a home opener against
Harford (MD).
Generating
a lot of excitement is freshman Alison Noll (Monmouth Junction,
NJ/South Brunswick), who captured the no. 1 singles title
at the Region 19 Championships in October. Noll was a late
addition to the team, but wasted no time in working her way
to the top in the region. Vecchiolla thinks Noll has tremendous
potential at the national level as well.
In addition to playing no. 1singles, Noll will team with freshman
Kati Courtney (Bordentown, NJ/Northern Burlington) at no.
1 doubles. Courtney should also be strong at no. 2 singles
for Mercer, after spending most of the fall being tested at
the top flight.
Vecchiolla notes that these women are among the most hard
working and enthusiastic groups he has ever coached.
Other returning freshmen from the fall season include Victoria
DeBlasio (Robbinsville, NJ/Notre Dame), Terelle Womble (East
Windsor, NJ/Hightstown), Rachel Young (Robbinsville, NJ/Robbinsville),
Melanie Hunter (Trenton, NJ/Nottingham) and Alicia Monticchio
(Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough).
Vecchiolla
will be assisted this season by Ralph Bencivengo and Barb
Pleva.
