2002 Women's Soccer Team Hoping to
Retain Regional Title

9/30/02

The Women's Soccer Team is off to a solid start with a record of 4 – 2.  Following a disappointing 4 – 1 loss against Elizabethtown JV (PA) in the first game of the season, the Vikings came on strong in their home opener on Sept. 14, beating Anne Arundel (MD) 3 – 1.  They followed that with a 6 – 1 victory over Sussex, an 11 – 0 rout of Morris Co. College, and an 8 – 2 win over Ocean CC.

The Vikings have shown a level of skill and energy that is taking the team to a whole new level.  They have set their sights on repeating as regional champs and returning to the JUCO national championships in November.  But a tough loss to Brookdale, 3 - 2 in overtime on Sept. 28, has set the stage for the regional battle.

Mercer has a competitive advantage with its solid nucleus of returning sophomores: forward Melanie Pollack, midfielders Ayesha Fitchett, Nikki Carr, and Michelle MacInnes, and defenders Dina Palmieri and Jazmin Fuschini.  The strong freshmen class brings on board Michelle Brown in goal, and adds talented forwards Kristin O’Donnell, Courtney Williams, Jennifer Brokaw, Christina Gutch, and Christina Shiu, midfielder Jackie Lewin, and defenders Heather Anderson and Suzanne Larson to the line-up.

Vikings Head Coach is Shelly Dearden, assisted by Cindy Astore, Krissy Bucchino, and Chelsea Dixon.  Go Vikings!
