After Slow Start Women’s Soccer Team Gains Momentum

9/29/05

The defending Region 19 champs were not expecting to be 0-3 after three games. But since their rocky start, the Vikings women’s soccer team has come back with a vengeance, posting a record of 4-3-1 as of Sept. 29.

Four talented sophomores, all of who earned post-season honors last year, include midfielders Cassandra Zulla, Krystal Schnarr, and Jennifer DePersio, and defender Lisa Walters. They are joined by Camille Carlucci, Marissa Forte and Catherine Amey. Freshmen Lauren Dunn, Jeanine Foster, Nicole Hover, Rosanna Collars, Melanie Livingston and Jenna Scaccetti have scored for the Vikings. The goalie is freshman Leah Sachs. Ten of the Vikings players hail from Mercer County.

Head Coach Shelly Dearden is in her 11th season with the Vikings.

Following their early losses, the Vikings beat Gloucester 2-0 on Sept. 16 and Bergen 5-0 on Sept. 17. They grinded out a 2-2 tie (OT) against Camden on Sept. 21 and then returned to the win column with a 2-1 victory over Essex (MD) Sept. 25. Their most impressive scoring effort came against Middlesex on Sept. 27 when they won 8-0.
