Team Wins Region 19 Semi-final Game;
Advances to Final
10/27/10
West Windsor,
N.J. -- There's no better time to come together as a team
than in the post season. That's the case for the MCCC women's
soccer team, which displayed a solid passing game and great
decision-making in its 3-0 win over Sussex CC in the semi-final
round of the NJCAA Region 19 Tournament. The game was played
on Oct. 26 at the Mercer Soccer Stadium. (The Vikings played
Sussex to a 2-2 tie during the regular season.)
Freshman
forward Cristina Alonso was a decisive presence, scoring two
goals in the first half. Midfielder Ana Garcia-Donas added
a goal in the second half. Alonso leads the team in goals
(12) and assists (9) and has been named the NJCAA Region 19
Player of the Year in women's soccer.
According
to Head Coach Jodie Ricciardi, now in her fourth season with
the Vikings, the success in the semis was a total team effort.
"We came out ready to play. We passed nicely and kept
possession of the ball until we were able to take nice shots
on goal." Ricciardi also credits her team with being
patient and not forcing the ball up field too quickly.
Reflecting
on their upcoming title game against Burlington, Ricciardi
said, "We are looking to do the exact same thing we did
against Sussex - come out strong and stay strong throughout."
This week's preparation will include some shooting and possession
drills.
The women
face Burlington CC in the Region 19 final on Saturday at NJIT
at 5 p.m. The MCCC men's final follows at 7:30 p.m.
