Randy Voorhees Named Head Coach
for MCCC Baseball Team

6/20/02

MCCC Athletic Director John Simone is pleased to announce the appointment of Randy Voorhees as head coach of the men's baseball team.  Voorhees served as assistant coach for the past three years under Dave Gallagher, who announced his resignation in early May.   Under their leadership, Mercer teams have posted a 92 – 35 record, including three straight Garden State Athletic Conference titles, and a Region 19 title and trip to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) World Series in 2000.

Said Simone, "I am delighted that Randy will assume this new role.  I know he will continue to provide our student-athletes with the high level of caring and development that has been a hallmark of Mercer's baseball program."

A resident of Hopewell Township, Voorhees has himself enjoyed athletic success as a Mercer student, playing in the NJCAA World Series in 1981, when the Vikings placed third in the nation.  Since joining the coaching staff with Gallagher in 1999, Voorhees has played an indispensable role as pitching and bench coach.

Said Voorhees, "Dave Gallagher has created a blueprint for success that I plan to follow closely.  He does things the right way.  I've learned a lot from him and I don't believe in fixing things that aren't broken.  To future players I say, 'The bad news is that I'm not Dave Gallagher.  The good news is I've stood next to him for the past three years and his record of accomplishment is one I plan to continue.'"

Voorhees noted that Mercer players have had an excellent transfer record to four-year schools.  "Our job is to help these kids develop as players and as people.  Mercer provides a great opportunity to do that especially if you're not sure what you want to do after high school.  Players have told me that they wish Mercer was a four-year school because they don’t want to leave."  Twelve Mercer players from the 2000 and 2001 squads transferred to four-year schools to continue their academic and athletic careers; seven second-year players are expected to continue at four-year schools this fall.

In addition to his activities at Mercer, Voorhees is head of pitching instruction for the Dave Gallagher All-American Baseball Academy at Frogbridge, a scout associate for the New York Mets and the author of nine books, including Making Little League More Fun for Kids.  Voorhees received his B.A. in history from Penn State University.
