West
Windsor, N.J. -- Last year, bad weather and high winds did
not deter the MCCC softball team from defeating the County
College of Morris twice on Morris's home field to advance
to the Division II NJCAA World Series.
So, the cloudy, cool conditions predicted for the Vikings'
home opener this Wednesday, Mar. 9, should not be an issue
as they face Cecil (MD) in a doubleheader, starting at 3 p.m.
Next,
the Vikings head south for the Snowbird Classic in Myrtle
Beach, SC, where they will get their version of spring training
-- nine games from Mar. 13-17. Their regular season resumes
at home on March 24, when they will play a doubleheader against
Sussex CC.
While
the roster has lost a few key players, includling ace pitcher
Jenna Berger, Head Coach Ryan Zegarski is hopeful that the
combination of returning players and rookies can come together
and bring home another regional title this season.
Zegarski expects major output from returning shortstop Kirsten
Edinger (Ewing, NJ/Ewing), who had huge numbers for the Vikings
in the NJCAA World Series, and All Region outfielder Alyssa
Becker (Yardley, PA/Pennsbury). Another sophomore, pitcher
Kelly Hancarik (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert), is expected to be
solid on the mound.
Backing
up Hancarik in the circle are rookies Kristen Schneider (Ewing,
NJ/Ewing) and Brianna Bryne (East Windsor, NJ/Hightstown),
a two-year starter for the women's soccer team. Zegarski is
also expecting big contributions from freshman catcher Angela
Marinos (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert), who, when not behind the
plate, can fill in at any position for the Vikings.
Zegarksi
will be assisted this season by Chris Freihaut.
