WEST WINDSOR,
N.J. - The women's softball team, whose record stands at 26-11,
will head for the Region 19 tournament this weekend at the County
College of Morris. The Vikings enter the tournament as the no. 4
seed, after Burlington, Del Tech and Morris.
Head coach Ryan Zegarski reflects on the team's progress during
the season and considers a regional title a definite possibility.
In their two regular season games against no. 1 Burlington, the
Vikings lost their first contest 4-3 in extra innings and a second
game 3-1. In both match-ups, Zegarski said, "we just needed
a few timely two-out hits and we would have won."
Anchoring the
team is the consistent pitching of sophomore Jenna Berger, who will
be on the mound for the Vikings this weekend. Backing up Berger
is freshman Beth Rochon, who has also done a great job for the team,
according to Zegarski.
Topping the hitting list are Berger and freshman outfielder Alyssa
Becker, along with freshman catcher/outfielder Angela Parascando,
who leads the team in home runs with four. "She stabilizes
the middle of the line-up," Zegarski said.
As they head into the regionals, Zegarski is still tinkering with
the line-up. "You strive to get it perfect -- to place players
in exactly the position where they can be most effective,"
he said.
