Mercer Soccer Teams Sweep Region 19

11/1/04

The men's soccer team celebrates after its crushing defeat
of Essex 7-0 in the Region 19 Final on Oct. 30

This is Mercer’s year. Both the men’s and women’s soccer teams captured Region 19 championships on Oct. 30. The women defeated Ocean CC 2-0 at Middlesex County College with goals by Cassie Zulla and Krystal Schnarr. Zulla, a freshman, was named the game’s offensive MVP and sophomore sweeper Danielle DiMeglio was named defensive MVP.

On the men’s side, it was all Mercer as the Vikings crushed Essex CC 7-0 at home. Five of the goals were scored in the first half as the men showed balance and depth in a contest where they controlled both the offensive and defensive action. Mario Kapxhiu and Travis McCoy scored two goals each, while Jose Miranda, Roy Sharaby and Shay Sharaby added single goals. Goalkeeping duties were shared by Dan Steingell and Tom DeStefano. Sophomore Miranda was selected as the offensive MPV, while defensive MVP honors went to freshman Jason James.

Both Mercer teams now advance to the Northeast District Tournament. The men head for Massasoit College in Brockton, MA, to face the CC of Rhode Island on Nov. 6 at 1 p.m. The winner of that game will face the winner of a contest between Massasoit and Monroe on Nov. 7 for the Northeast District title.

The women will play in Rhode Island. Teams are still to be announced.

Region 19 official Ron Case presents the offensive MVP award to Jose Miranda.

Jason James receives the game's
defensive MVP award from Case.
