MCCC Soccer Squads to Play for Region 19 Titles

10/29/09

West Windsor, N.J. - Mercer County Community College's men's and women's soccer teams are one win away from repeating as Region 19 Tournament champions. Both teams will go after titles on Saturday, Oct. 31 at New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark.

The men will get the action started at noon against rival Essex County College. Coach Charlie Inverso's squad (14-1) will attempt to win its ninth straight region title. The top-seeded Vikings defeated Essex, 3-0, in a regular-season matchup on Oct. 9 in Newark.

The depth of MCCC's lineup was on display in its 6-2 win over Burlington County College in the semifinals on Monday, Oct. 26. Six players scored goals, Hosman Ramos (Miami), Amit Aburmad (Tel Aviv, Israel), Joe Jappah (Coatesville, Pa.), Ido Ligety (Tivan, Israel), Luigi Moriello (Trenton, N.J.) and Rockie Kazouh (Trenton, N.J.). In addition, with two starters, goalie Sean Duble (West Cocoa, Fla.) and right back Victor Angulo (Miami), out because of injuries, former area high school standouts Dave Schindewolf (Lawrence, N.J.) and Mohammed Conteh (Plainsboro, N.J.) made a seamless transition into the lineup.

Coach Jodie Ricciardi's women's squad will take a 15-4-1 record into its 2 p.m. final at NJIT. The second-seeded Vikings will play either top-seeded Burlington County College or fourth-seeded Lackawanna Junior College, who were scheduled to meet in a semifinal on Thursday, Oct. 29.

The Viking women are playing at their highest level of the season, as evidenced by a 5-1 win over Sussex County College in the semifinals on Wednesday, Oct. 28. Sophomore forward Kasey Kenny (Staten Island, N.Y.) scored twice to give her 30 goals, one more than she had during her National Junior College Athletic Association Division I All-American season of 2008. Carolyn Walters (Hamilton, N.J.) also scored to increase her season total to 12 goals, placing her second after Kenny.
