During
the annual Student-Athlete Appreciation Breakfast in May, MCCC
Athletics Director John Simone announced the winners of the college’s
Scholar-Athlete Scholarship Awards.
Brian
Bunn received the award for the male scholar-athlete.
Bunn, a sophomore member of the Mercer men’s tennis team
played no. 4 singles last season and no. 3 singles this year,
as well as second doubles. With a team record of 8-2 going into
this year’s Region 19 tournament, Bunn and partner Jeff
Weber won the championship at second doubles. The Vikings earned
16 points and qualified for the NJCAA national tournament in Plano,
TX. In national competition, Mercer placed sixth out of 11 teams.
Bunn and Weber won their quarterfinal match, but were defeated
in the semi-final round. Bunn won his consolation final at no.
3 singles. A Business Administration major, Bunn will transfer
to Rutgers University in the fall to continue his education.
Samantha
White was the recipient of the female scholar-athlete
award for her role on the MCCC women’s softball team over
the past two years. With White starting every game at first base,
the Vikings went to the Region 19 final this year, ending the
season with a 22-14 record, an impressive turn-around from last
year’s 11-18 season. White, who majors in Advertising Design,
will transfer to The College of New Jersey in the fall.
