Three exceptional Mercer students were selected for Scholar Athlete Awards this year: Jillian Byrne, Clifford Pollard and Landry Shelley. MCCC Athletic Director John Simone presented them with their awards during the Honors Convocation held prior to commencement on May 30. Byrne was recognized for excellence on the soccer field and in the classroom. She was a two-year starter for the Women’s Soccer Team and served as team captain in 2003. She was a regional all-star both years and earned President List honors while at Mercer for earning more than 50 credits and a 3.75 GPA. Byrne is pursuing an associate degree in early childhood education and plans to continue her education at a four-year school. Pollard, who earned Dean’s List honors and graduated from Mercer with an associate degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences, was a forward on the Men’s Basketball Team. The team recorded more than 30 victories during his two years on the team. He plans to major in business at the University of Delaware or Monmouth University in the fall. Shelley was recognized
for her role on the Women’s Tennis Team. She played two years
of tennis at first singles and first doubles with a 17-6 record in singles
and 18-5 record in doubles. Mercer won the Region 19 championship both
years, placed sixth in the nation in 2003 and fifth in the nation in
2004. Shelley achieved Dean’s List and President List honors and
