Women’s Tennis Team Looks Forward to Competitive Season
9/9/04
Head Coach Marc Vecchiolla anticipates a fine season
of tennis for the Mercer women. With only one returning player, Silvina
Wills, there will be lots of new talent on the court.
In addition to Wills, the Vikings roster includes Caitlin Bagdonas,
Siobhan Cahill, Natalia Dabrowska, Krystle Duay, Rachel Hendrickson
and Monica Nichols.
" They're a nice group and they all strike the ball well,"
Vecchiolla said. "They've been practicing hard in preparation for
their first match, scheduled for Sept. 14 against Gloucester."
According to Vecchiolla, most of the Mercer squad played in high school.
While setting no definite goals for regional or national titles, he
believes this team has the makings of champions. "It all depends
on what kind of competition we face," he said.
Vecchiolla notes that Brookdale's #1 and #2 players, who won the region
in their flights last year, will be returning, making Brookdale the
region's toughest competition. That challenge comes on Sept. 16 when
the Vikings faces Brookdale at home (Mercer County Park) at 4 p.m.
Should the Mercer women earn a berth at the nationals, as they have
for the past seven years, they will play in Tuscon, Arizona in May,
2005.
Ralph Bencivengo and Barb Pleva return this season as assistant coaches.
