Head Coach
Larry Povia
Men's Soccer
First Year
8/30/10
Larry
Povia, MCCC's new head coach for men's soccer, knows a lot
about the game - and about the Mercer program. Povia has served
as the Vikings' assistant coach and goalkeeping coach since
1986. He welcomes the opportunity to pick up the reins from
long-time coach Charlie Inverso, who resigned at the end of
the 2009 season after 24 seasons.
Under Inverso and Povia, the Vikings earned a record of 434-46-14
and won five National Junior College Athletic Association
titles (of the program's eight championships). Povia helped
the Vikings advance to the NJCAA Final Four 12 times and has
trained a long list of All-Region and All-American players.
He was inducted into the NJCAA Hall of Fame in 2008, one of
only two assistant coaches ever to be selected.

Povia
was an original member of the Mercer National Tournament Association,
a volunteer group that worked with the MCCC Athletics Department
under the direction of Al Leister to host the NJCAA National Tournament
on the college's campus from 1982 to 1990.
A soccer player since the age of 10, Povia was a goalkeeper at Steinert
High School and then Rider University, where he earned his B.S.
in Commerce in 1977. He is an information technology manager for
the State of New Jersey.
