Men’s Soccer Team Sets Out to Defend National Title

9/29/05

Following up on a national title is no easy feat, but as the Vikings men's soccer team nears midpoint in its season, Mercer is proving a dominant force once again.

With a record of 7-0 as of Sept. 29, the roster includes many talented newcomers. According to Head Coach Charlie Inverso, now in his 19th season with the Vikings, the team's six returning sophomores are providing a solid anchor, while some of the new players are making significant contributions, both defensively and offensively. Inverso noted, "So far so good. We need to be tougher and not get too excited about being undefeated."

Freshmen forwards Anthony Moy, a Montgomery High School grad, Awal Mohammed, Rafael Segal, a native of Israel, and Nick Devine, a graduate of Princeton High School who was named the 2003 Co-Area Player of the Year by the Trenton Times, have scored critical goals in several close games. Sophomore Tom DeStefano is an able defender in goal.

Key games included a 2-1 victory over highly ranked Massasoit Community College on Sept. 18 with Mercer’s two goals coming in the last ten minutes of play, and a 3-1 win over Bryant & Stratton on Sept. 22, the team which handed the Vikings their only loss last season. The Vikings face Bryant & Stratton again on Oct. 15 (A).

After opening the season with a 6-0 victory over Del Tech on Sept. 8, the Vikings continued their winning ways: 5-2 over Globe Institute (NY) on Sept. 14, 7-1 over CCBC (MD) on Sept. 15, 2-0 over Dean CC (MA) 2-0 on Sept. 16, and 3-0 over Nassau (NY) on Sept. 26.
