The Mercer men's
soccer team has capped off a comeback season by winning the Northeast
District Championship in Franklin, MA. Just one month ago, the Vikings'
record was 5-4-1. But the team got the job done in the end with
a 3-1 against Massasoit CC on Nov. 3 and a 3-0 win over Monroe CC
on Nov. 4. The Vikings travel to Tyler, TX, for the seventh consecutive
year to compete in the National Junior College Athletic Association
(NJCAA) tournament, to be held Nov. 15-18.
Going into the
nationals, Mercer's record is 14-5-1. In the latest NJCAA polls,
the Vikings have moved from 13th to 6th place. In addition to Mercer,
the eight-team tournament includes Georgia Perimeter (19-0-2), Yavapai
College (21-2-0), Marshalltown CC (20-1-0), Jefferson College (18-3-0).
San Jancinto College-South (15-2-2), Illinois Central College (18-4-0),
and CCBC-Essex (13-5-1).
In Region 19
play-off action, the Vikings defeated Del Tech 3-0 in the semi-final
round on Oct. 24 and Essex CC 4-1 in the finals on Oct. 27.
