Kelly McKenna Named Head Coach
for Women’s Softball Team

6/28/02

Kelly McKenna, a former standout at Rider University, has been named Mercer's new head softball coach.  McKenna comes to Mercer after a season as head coach at Princeton High School.

McKenna played Division I softball from 1997 – 2000 at Rider.  She participated on Rider's NCAA College World Series team in 1997, was voted a pre-season MAAC Conference All-American in 2000 and received an Academic Athletic Award in 2000.

"I want to step up the [Mercer] program to another level, yet allow the players to still have fun," said McKenna.  "I plan to bring a positive outlook and create a good atmosphere for the players."

Said Athletic Director John Simone, "I am very pleased that Kelly will be directing our softball program.  She brings a wealth of collegiate and competitive softball knowledge to Mercer, solid local recruiting contacts and a tremendous passion for the game."

McKenna replaces Joanne Harrison, who resigned after three years as head coach at the conclusion of the spring season.
