MCCC
to Host Region 19 Baseball Tournament this Weekend;
Action Starts Friday Morning
5/9/12
West
Windsor, N.J. -- Mercer County Community College is gearing
up to host the NJCAA Division II Region XIX Tournament, to
be played this weekend at MCCC and Mercer County Park. The
Vikings earned a bye in last weekend's play-in round, one
of their goals going into the tournament, according to MCCC
Head Coach Kevin Kerins.
The Final Four features MCCC as the no. 2 seed. The Vikings
will face Burlington County College (the no. 3 seed) on Friday,
May 11 at 9 a.m. on MCCC's field on the West Windsor campus,
1200 Old Trenton Road. Appearing in the other 9 a.m. game,
to be played at Mercer County Park, is no. 1 seed Lackawanna
and no. 4 seed Del Tech Owens. The Vikings will then play
the winner or loser of that contest at 12 p.m. at MCCC's home
field in the double elimination tournament.
The action continues on Saturday. A play-off game will be
played on Sunday if necessary. The schedule is available on
the Athletics website here.
Mercer's record going into the post-season is 27-12 overall
and 10-4 in the region. Kerins notes that Lackawanna, with
a 41-10 record overall and an unbeaten 14-0 record in the
region, will clearly be the team to beat.
In post-regular season honors, MCCC shortstop Mike Constantini
and third baseman Rick McLaughlin (both sophomores and Steinert
graduates), were named first-team All-Region and have been
nominated as NJCAA All-Americans. Sophomore outfielder Ian
Moyer (Northern Burlington) was named a second-team All-Region
and freshman outfielder Dan Denton (Council Rock North) was
a first-team all-Garden State Athletic Conference selection.
