Athletics Department Recognizes Year of Achievement
Women's Softball Team Heads for Nationals

5/15/07

What better World Series send-off for the Vikings women's softball team than an all-star breakfast? Approximately 75 student-athletes and staff members gathered for a recognition breakfast on May 11. MCCC Athletics Director John Simone and Dean of for Enrollment and Student Services Dr. Diane Campbell expressed their gratitude on behalf of the college for the commitment and achievements of Mercer athletes and for the stellar way they have represented the college throughout the year.

The women's softball team travels to Normal, IL, on May 15 for their first appearance in the NJCAA World Series since 1988. Heading into the national championship with a 37-6 record, the Vikings will first face Kankakee CC (IL) on May 17 in the double-elimination, eight-team tournament, with the final to be played on May 19. The men's tennis team also headed to the nationals, to be played May 13-18 in Plano, TX.

Other highlights of the 2006-07 year were the men's soccer team's second place finish in the national tournament and the selection of women's basketball player Patti Foley as a first-team All-American, only the third woman in Mercer basketball history to achieve this goal. Former tennis player Natalia Huff won the 2006 CAANJ Female Student-Athlete Award.

This was also a notable year for members of the athletic staff: trainer Lisa Camillone was honored by the National Athletic Trainers' Association with its Annual Service Award; men's soccer coach Charlie Inverso was inducted into the NJCAA Soccer Hall of Fame; women's softball coach Ryan Zegarski was named the Region 19 Softball Coach of the Year; health and fitness director Bob Pugh was the recipient of the Bob Kanaby Award from the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association; and athletics coordinator John Wagner earned the "Man of the Year Award" from the Trenton Select Committee.
