Vikings Pitcher Nick Economos Drafted by Pittsburgh Pirates

6/11/15

West Windsor, N.J. – Mercer County Community College (MCCC) pitcher Nick Economos was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 21st round of the Major League Baseball draft on Wednesday. The 6'6" sophomore, who was named to the First Team All-Region and All-Conference, finished the season with a record of 7-0 with 70 strikeouts in 50.2 innings pitched.

Economos' selection marks the fourth MCCC baseball player to be drafted by the MLB in the last five years.

According to Head Coach Kevin Kerins, Economos was one of several players who attracted the attention of scouts during the fall and spring seasons.

"There was a definite excitement whenever Nick was on the mound, with several scouts following each start," Kerins said, adding that Nick and several other players were invited to pre-draft workouts.

The Vikings will no doubt miss the hard-working sophomore. "Nick was a tremendous worker for us. We saw him improve with each start and really mature as a player and a person." Kerins predicts that his best days are ahead of him.

Kerins observes that Nick's decision to come to Mercer from his hometown of Worcester, Mass., shows both the strong reputation of the MCCC baseball program and the hard work the coaches are putting in year-round to increase the program's recruiting area.
