MCCC Sports Teams Are Top Seeds in Upcoming Regional Tournaments

The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XIX tournaments begin Oct. 22 and all three of MCCC’s fall teams will begin their quests for a national championship as the region’s top rated teams.

The Region 19 Women’s Tennis Tournament will be held on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 22 and 23 at Mercer County Park. The Vikings, who just concluded their second consecutive 10-0 season, will be seeking their eighth consecutive regional title. They will compete against teams from Brookdale Community College, Gloucester County College, and The County College of Morris. The winner of the tournament will advance to the national championships, to be held in Tuscon, AZ from May 7 – 13, 2005.

The Men’s Soccer Team concluded its regular season on Oct. 18 with a record of 13-1-1 and is currently ranked second in the country. The Vikings will enter the Region 19 Tournament as the #1 seed and will face #4-seeded Del Tech on Tuesday, Oct. 26 at home at 7:30 p.m. (The other semi-final game will match #2-seeded Ocean County College and #3-seeded Essex County College.) The final will be held on Saturday, Oct. 30 at 1 p.m. at Mercer. The Region 19 winner will advance to the four-team Northeast District championship tournament on Nov. 6 and 7 at Massasoit Community College in Brockton, MA. The national tournament will be held in Tyler, TX from Nov. 18 – 21.

The Women’s Soccer Team will also enter the Region 19 Tournament as the #1 seed, facing Sussex County Community College, the #4 seed, at home on Tuesday, Oct. 26 at 5 p.m. The Mercer women are currently 7-4-2. A win over Sussex will put them in the regional final against the winner of the game between #2-seeded Ocean County College and #3-seeded Essex County College. The final will be played at Middlesex County College on Saturday, Oct. 30 at 1 p.m. The Region 19 winner will advance to the four-team Northeast District tournament on Nov. 6 and 7. The women’s national tournament will be held from Nov. 18 – 21 in Phoenix, AZ.
