MCCC Students, Faculty to Celebrate Black History Month

TRENTON, NJ – Mercer County Community College’s (MCCC) student talent will be on display, along with informative lectures by college staff in celebration of Black History Month, to be held throughout February at both the Trenton and West Windsor campuses. Most events are free and open to the public.

Opening ceremonies will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 1 at MCCC’s Kerney Hall on the Trenton Campus, 102 North Broad Street. Trenton Campus Provost Monica Weaver will be the keynote speaker. Closing ceremonies will be held at noon Thursday, Feb. 28, at the Student Center on MCCC’s West Windsor Campus, 1200 Old Trenton Road and will feature an African dance troupe. Numerous other activities are schedule throughout the month, including:

  •  “1960 Black,” a play looking at one of the most influential decades in African-American history, Saturday, Feb. 2 at 2 p.m. at the Kelsey Theatre, on the West Windsor Campus.   • Professor Mel Leipzig Art History lecture: “African-American Painters: Horace Pippin and Jacob Lawrence,” noon to 1 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 6, KC319, Trenton Campus.
  • “Drumming: The Musical Evolution of African Continentals Throughout the World,” 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 9, Student Center, West Windsor Campus.
  • Women’s and men’s basketball game versus Morris County College and Breast Cancer Awareness Night, sponsored by American Association for Women in Community Colleges and the MCCC Athletic Department, 5 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, MCCC gymnasium, West Windsor Campus. Game tickets: Adult, $3; senior citizens, $1. MCCC students and children under 12 free.
  • Screening of documentary “Hidden Colors,” with discussion moderated by Professor Alvyn Haywood, 6 p.m., Friday, Feb. 15, Kerney Hall, Trenton Campus.
  • Variety Show sponsored by Youth College, Delta Youth, Trenton Campus Provost’s Office, and the African-American Student Organization (AASO) at 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, at Kelsey Theatre, West Windsor Campus.
  • Fireside chat with Dr. Guy Generals, vice president of academic affairs, and panel discussion on the novel “The Warmth of Other Suns,” 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 27, Kerney Hall, Trenton Campus.
  • “GospelFest 2013,” sponsored by AASO and featuring the Meelow-Aires, The Voices, and Bill Baylor and Surround, with student Tashanna Ellis serving as worship leader. Friday, Feb. 22, 6:30 p.m. at Friendship Baptist Church, 111 Perry Street, Trenton.
