WEST WINDSOR, NJ – Following a shutout of Massasoit, 3-0, in the Region 19 tournament on Oct. 29, the Mercer County Community College’s men’s soccer team travels to Michigan on Nov. 4 for the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division 2 Northeast District Championship, with the winner receiving an automatic bid to the national tournament.
The Vikings (9-6-2) will take on the Region 12 champion, Schoolcraft College, in Livonia, Mich, at noon. Schoolcraft is 14-2 on the season and ranked sixth in Division II men’s soccer. Schoolcraft defeated Grand Rapids Community College 3-1 to advance to the Northeast District Championship.
En route to the Region 19 championship, Mercer freshman Francesco Quintavalla (Parma, Italy) logged a goal and an assist, with sophomores Teddy Nkamanyi (Cologne, Germany) and Kida Yamaguchi (Hiroshima, Japan) each adding a goal in the win. Freshman Alou Gamby (Landsale, Pa.) had an assist, while freshman goalie Elias Ruano (Telde, Spain) recorded a shutout.
Nkamanyi was named the Offensive MVP of the tournament, with sophomore Dillon Du Toit (Johannesburg, South Africa) earning Defensive MVP honors. Head Coach Widmarc Dalce was named Region 19 Coach of the Year for the sixth time in his 12 seasons.
