West Windsor, N.J. – Mercer County Community College (MCCC) sophomore Greg Delgado earned Garden State Athletic Conference Player of the Week on Tuesday, March 10.

The honor comes after Delgado batted a .514 (18-for-35) through the first 10 games of the season, which includes a 1.000 slugging percentage. He managed just .a 222 batting average (6-for-27) through the same stretch last year.

“Greg’s performance compared to last year is night and day,” said MCCC Baseball Head Coach Fred Carella. Currently, Delgado is in the top 100 in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II in hits (77th), doubles (34th), triples (3rd) and home runs (80th).

“I think last year he put too much pressure on himself,” Carella said.

During the 2019 season, Delgado competed for time against then MCCC sophomore Domenic Boselli. Boselli had a standout season, batting a .439, including a team-highs in home runs (12) and on base percentage (.511), which earned him a scholarship to play at George Washington University.

Meanwhile, Delgado struggled to find his rhythm, batting a .260 through 127 at bats last season.

This year however, Carella said that he saw a change in Delgado’s outlook from day one.

“He’s been working hard since the preseason. He’s always one of the first guys in, and every at bat has been a quality, hard contact appearance,” Carella said.

“In one of our games this fall we were down in the first inning,” Carella recalled. “Greg called the whole team together, said what he needed to as a leader, and really turned that day around for us."

Delgado followed his Player of the Week award with a hit, run scored, and a stolen base in a 12-0 Viking victory over Buck County Community College on March 10.

“My biggest factor at the plate right now is that I’m looking to do damage early in the count and being a situational hitter,” Delgado said.

Though the season is still in its relative infancy, Delgado has also had the honor of winning Player of the Week while sharing the field with three of his family members: his brother, Xavier (Savi), and his cousins, Carlos Roman-Delgado and Alex Tiburcio.

“To share the same field with my brother and cousins means the world to me,” Delgado said.

“We have been playing this game together for so long. To have the opportunity to play at the college level is something very special to me and to our family back home.”
