Black History Month Celebration Continues Feb. 5
“Destination vs. Reality” is the theme for MCCC's 2020 observance of Black History Month. This February, the college will host a number of special events with an emphasis on culture, relationships and education. Up next is the Opening Ceremony, held on Feb. 5 at the James Kerney Campus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and featuring Minister Gerald Truehart as the Keynote Speaker. Then, on Feb. 6 students, staff and faculty are invited to two screenings of "When They See Us (Part 1)" at JKC at noon and 5 p.m. Read more here.

 

Opening Reception for 'Searching For the Cultural Plumb Bob' Feb. 5
A true multi-sensory trifecta of olfactory, tactile and visual awaits visitors at The Gallery at MCCC for the latest exhibition entitled “Searching for the Cultural Plumb Bob,” on display Jan. 27 through March 5 featuring the works of Uzbekistan native Zahar Vaks. A conversation with the artist will be held at on Feb. 5 at noon in CM107, with the opening reception to follow that day at 5 p.m. in the West Windsor Gallery. Read more here.

 

Seductive and Vibrant 'Cabaret' Comes to Life at Kelsey Theatre Feb. 7
The Kelsey Theatre at MCCC in conjunction with Theater To Go continues to push the boundaries this season with the landmark musical production “Cabaret.” This 1998 revival of the 1966 Broadway hit, based on the short novel “Goodbye to Berlin,” harkens back to authoritarian 1930s Germany where nightlife at the smokey Kit Kat Klub offers a refuge for escapists. Decadence, sexual ambiguity and good times are the norm until a dark turn brings everything to an end. Read more here.

'Pine Barren Extravaganza is the Sierra Lecture Topic on Feb. 12

Dr. Emile DeVito is a dynamic speaker who will talk about saving the unique natural heritage of the pine barrens, a 1.1 million preserve set aside by an act of Congress in 1978.  Larger than Yosemite or the Grand Canyon National Park, in 1988 it was also designated an International Biosphere Reserve. Open House at the Learning Center on Feb. 12

Encourage your students to stop by the Learning Center between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Feb. 12 for a Valentine's Day themed open house. Located on the second floor of the student center, the Learning Center offers a comprehensive tutoring program
to meet student needs across the disciplines. The tutors are knowledgeable, patient and experienced. See the flyer here.

'Frozen Jr.' Will Thaw the Coldest Hearts at Kelsey Theatre on Feb. 28

The Tomato Patch Workshops production of Disneys “Frozen JR.” hits the Kelsey stage at MCCC Feb. 28 through March 1. Part of the Kelsey Kids Series, this enchanting modern classic from Disney is based on the 2018 Broadway musical. The show brings Elsa, Anna, and the magical land of Arendelle to life. It features all of the memorable songs from the animated film, with music and lyrics by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, in addition to five new songs written for the Broadway production. French Ambassador to U.S. Proposes Educational Partnership During Campus Visit 
The nation of France is committed to globalization and international cooperation to address the challenges faced by the global community, according to the country’s newly-appointed Ambassador to the United States, Philippe Étienne. And he wants MCCC to be a part of it. Read more here

 

MCCC's Alpha Theta Gamma Chapter Earns Five-Star Designation
For the fourth-straight year, MCCC’s Alpha Theta Gamma chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society will be recognized as a five-star organization. Read more here.

 

Alumni Story: Botanist and Alumna Gemma Milly Lives Among the Trees
A New Jersey native, Gemma Milly grew up in the Hopewell Valley, about 12.5 miles northwest of MCCC’s West Windsor Campus. She spent her childhood in those same backdrops featured in her headshots – the great outdoors. Now, she works as a Land Steward with the Friends of Hopewell Valley Open Space and runs her own botanical consulting business, a pair of roles she loves and can talk about at length. 'Harm Reducation Policies Applied to Drug Use in the U.S.' is Lecture Topic Feb.12 
Michael James Prohaska will deliver his lecture “Pragmatism vs. Puritanism: Harm Reduction Policies Applied to Drug Use in the United States” on Wednesday, Feb. 12 at noon in the Communications Building, Room CM108 on the college’s West Windsor Campus. The lecture is free and open to the public. Read more here.

 

 


Reminders

Call for College Catalog Updates; Due Feb. 21. The 2020-21 College Catalog is now in production, with content review [current edition here] and updates being solicited college-wide. Anyone with updates to contribute should contact the point person (dean, director, supervisor, coordinator, etc.) for the area involved. That person likely received notification this week for submitting any revisions for their area. For further assistance, contact Brad Kent in Publications at ext. 3772 or kentb@mccc.edu.

Through May 6: Lunchtime Yoga, Zumba.   The Student Life and Leadership Department sponsors Yoga and Zumba classes for students, faculty, and staff. Monday Evening Yoga begins Feb. 10 and runs through May 4  in PE225 from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday Zumba starts Feb. 11 and continues through May 5 in the Gym from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday Lunchtime Yoga begins Feb. 12 and runs through May 6 in the Gym from noon to 1 p.m. (No Classes the Week of Spring Break March 16-20).
