Transfer Workshop for The College of New Jersey on Feb. 11
Remind your students that the transfer workshop for The College of New Jersey will be held on Feb. 11 at noon in ET 217. For a full schedule fo transfer events for the spring semester, click here.

 

Black History Month Continues Feb. 11
“Destination vs. Reality” is the theme for MCCC's 2020 observance of Black History Month. This February, the college will host a number of special events with an emphasis on culture, relationships and education. Up next is the "Healthy Soul Food" Cooking Demo, held on Feb. 11 at the James Kerney Campus from noon to 1 p.m. Then, on Feb. 12 join us for a "Jeopardy" game show at 11:30 a.m. in the West Windsor Cafeteria. Students, staff and faculty are also invited to two screenings of "When They See Us (Part 1)" at JKC at noon and 5 p.m. For a full list of events, click here.

 

Learning Center Open House Feb. 12
Encourage your students to stop by the Learning Center between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Feb. 12 for a Valentine's Day themed open house. Located on the second floor of the student center, the Learning Center offers a comprehensive tutoring program
to meet student needs across the disciplines. The tutors are knowledgeable, patient and experienced. See the flyer here.
'Pine Barren Extravaganza is the Sierra Lecture Topic on Feb. 12

Dr. Emile DeVito is a dynamic speaker who will talk about saving the unique natural heritage of the pine barrens, a 1.1 million acre preserve set aside by an act of Congress in 1978.  Larger than Yosemite or the Grand Canyon National Park, in 1988 it was also designated an International Biosphere Reserve. Harm Reduction and Drug Use Is Lecture Topic Feb. 12
Harm reduction with regard to drug use in America will be the topic of the first MCCC Distinguished Lecture for Spring 2020. Michael James Prohaska will deliver his lecture “Pragmatism vs. Puritanism: Harm Reduction Policies Applied to Drug Use in the United States” on Wednesday, Feb. 12 at noon in CM108. New Student Orientation Continues Feb. 14
New students are invited to learn everything they need to know about the James Kerney Campus at the final student orientation session for the spring 2020 semester. Pre-registration is encouraged. To register, click here.  
Classic Comedy 'Last of the Red hot Lovers' Comes to Kelsey Feb. 14
The Yardley Players production of “Last of the Red Hot Lovers” takes personal desperation and hilarity to an entirely new level when married, middle-aged and nebbishy Barney Cashman, a seafood restaurant owner, tests out his inner Don Juan. The Neil Simon classic takes the stage at the Kelsey Theatre from Feb. 14 through 23. For tickets, click here
NJ FAFSA Days Return Feb. 22
If your students are returning to school, MCCC is opening its West Windsor and James Kerney campuses for a series of events focused on streamlining the process to submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Two more NJ FAFSA Days are scheduled for the Spring 2020 semester: Saturday, Feb. 22 in AD223 on the West Windsor Campus and Saturday, Feb. 29 in KC225 at the James Kerney Campus. Both events are scheduled to run from 9 a.m. to noon. Students should bring their 2018 tax transcripts. Those under age 24 should bring a parent's tax transcript. Permanent Resident card holders must bring their cards with them. Read more here

MCCC's Continuing Studies Director, Jigna Rao, Receives 2020 Lead NJ Scholarship
Jigna Rao, Director of The Center for Continuing Studies, was recently selected as a 2020 Lead New Jersey Fellow through a scholarship award from the Princeton Mercer Regional Chamber in partnership with NJM Insurance Group and PSE&G. Rao is the first MCCC staff member in the history of the college to receive this distinguished award. In her post at MCCC, Rao oversees noncredit programs that create educational and professional opportunities for the region’s workforce as well as offerings for personal enrichment. Humane Society Chef Promotes Better Health, Bigger Profits, With Plant-Based Cooking Workshop for MCCC Culinary Students
There’s very little doubt: a plant-based diet is good for those concerned with animal welfare, it’s good for the environment, and is better for personal health. But for MCCC Culinary Arts students, you can add one more thing to the list: It’s good for business. To keep students abreast of the latest dining trend, the Humane Society of the United States brought in two plant-based nutrition experts to demonstrate philosophy and technique as it pertains to offering great tasting meatless dishes. Viking in the Spotlight: Darnella McMillan
Through 17 games in the 2019-20 season, MCCC women's basketball player Darnella McMillan recorded 61 assists, nine shy of the 70 she dished out through 25 games last year. At her current rate of 3.5 assists per game, She is on pace to finish the as the team’s leading passer. Read more here.

A variety of styles from local vendors were on display at our 2020 Black History Month Fashion Show at the James Kerney Campus. Many of the clothes were modeled by current MCCC Fashion and Design Students. See the full photo album here

 


Reminders

Call for College Catalog Updates; Due Feb. 21. The 2020-21 College Catalog is now in production, with content review [current edition here] and updates being solicited college-wide. Anyone with updates to contribute should contact the point person (dean, director, supervisor, coordinator, etc.) for the area involved. That person likely received direct notification for submitting any revisions for their area. For further assistance, contact Brad Kent in Publications at ext. 3772 or kentb@mccc.edu.

Through May 6: Lunchtime Yoga, Zumba.   The Student Life and Leadership Department sponsors Yoga and Zumba classes for students, faculty, and staff. Monday Evening Yoga begins Feb. 10 and runs through May 4  in PE225 from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday Zumba starts Feb. 11 and continues through May 5 in the Gym from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday Lunchtime Yoga begins Feb. 12 and runs through May 6 in the Gym from noon to 1 p.m. (No Classes the Week of Spring Break March 16-20).
