West Windsor – Cannabis professions in New Jersey are hot, and now is the time to get in on the ground floor of this growing industry. Mercer County Community College (MCCC) is currently accepting students in its health professions program: Medical Cannabis Training. Six scholarships are available to anyone demonstrating financial need and tuition waivers are available to veterans.

The 15-hour non-credit class, open to students age 18 or older, will provide the necessary background to gain a foothold in New Jersey’s highly regulated cannabis industry. Classes will be held Monday evenings, April 3 through May 1 from 6 - 9 p.m. on the Zoom online conferencing platform. The course is offered through MCCC’s Center for Continuing Studies and students will receive a certificate upon successful completion of the course.

Medical Cannabis Training is intended for anyone interested in launching a career in the cannabis profession.

“There is a real need for employees to fill jobs in the cannabis industry,” explained  Sarah Trent, course instructor and owner of Valley Wellness. “In this course, subject matter experts will cover federal and state laws and regulations, the endocannabinoid system, cultivation basics and how cannabis products are made as well as dispensary technician training techniques such as dosing, administration and compliance,” said Trent.

Trent explained that over the past year Valley Wellness has expanded and updated the course to include conversations about new types of licenses including wholesale, distribution and consumption lounges, and the addition of new products to the New Jersey market including concentrates.

“Businesses are in need of a workforce that has an understanding of the industry,” said Trent. “And, through a unique partnership with the New Jersey Cannabis Trade Association (“NJCTA”) and Mercer County Community College, we bring scholarships to the program to those with demonstrated financial need.”

Eligible applicants are encouraged to apply at MCCC.edu/cannabis.

Dr. Gonzalo Perez, AVP of Academic Affairs, Workforce Education and Innovation at MCCC commented, “At Mercer County Community College workforce training of our residents is a top priority, and right now we see high demand for skilled workers in this industry.”

The cost for the five-session live virtual course is $500. Apprenticeships in the industry may be available after course completion for those age 21 and older. Tuition will be sponsored for up to five veterans who complete the course.
