MCCC's Tutoring Services Announces Tutoring Schedules for Fall 2020 Semester

09/08/20

West Windsor, N.J. – Following a summer of test driving a new, virtual approach to delivering its services, Tutoring Services at Mercer County Community College (MCCC) is announcing its plans to help students this fall 2020 semester.

Coinciding with the start of classes, Tutoring Services will begin hosting sessions for its Virtual Front Desk, Writing, and Science Learning Centers on Tuesday Sept. 8. Sessions for the Academic Core Enrichment (ACE) study groups will begin on Monday, Sept. 14.

According to Coordinator of Tutoring Services John Kashmer, the writing center made a push to replicate as many of its physical, in-person services in a virtual space as possible.

“When we’re on campus, students could just drop by Tutoring Services when they had a question,” Kashmer said. “Though we’ll have plenty of opportunities for students to make appointments with our staff one-on-one, we are also excited to offer drop-in, small group sessions just like we would before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Every Monday through Saturday this semester, Tutoring Services is offering Tutor-Supervised Study Halls, which provide a quiet, group space for students to complete homework and class projects. Tutors will be present the entire time, available to assist students at a moment’s notice.

The ACE study groups operate similarly, but are focused on specific subjects like Math, Writing, Chemistry, Biology, Business, Physics, Spanish, and ESL. When a student enrolls in a course with a study group, they are automatically invited to the ACE gatherings and are welcome to join them as frequently as they like.

Other offerings this semester include, Essay Glance, which will provide students quick feedback on written assignments, as well as a September Poetry and Fiction Reading, during which students can share and listen to the writings of their peers.

Tutoring Services is also building a library of on-demand videos covering topics such as MLA and APA citations, online library resources, and more.

“We want to make sure that all of our students have access to our resources at the tip of their fingers,” Kashmer said. “We’re constantly working to add and update our services. Creating a positive MCCC student experience is our No. 1 goal.”
