West Windsor/Trenton, N.J. – “Destination vs. Reality” is the theme for Mercer County Community College’s (MCCC) 2020 observance of Black History Month. This February, the college will host a number of special events with an emphasis on culture, relationships and education.
The events are split between MCCC's West Windsor Campus, and the James Kerney Campus (JKC). The closing ceremonies will be held at West Windsor.
The following events, open to the public, kick off with the Fashion Show Scholarship Event at JKC on Feb. 1 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will see minority vendors selling a variety of products, as well as performances from a live band formed by MCCC Alumni.
Opening ceremonies are scheduled for Feb. 5 at 11:30 a.m. at Kerney Hall (JKC), and will feature a luncheon catered by Smoke House Grill. The keynote speaker is Minister Gerald Truehart of Lion of Judah Studio and New Horizon Baptist Church.
On Feb. 22 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. both campuses will feature Celebrations of Song and Dance, a series of performances by MCCC students and staff and hosted by staff members Hope Jarvis and Quenten Couch. Also featured will be duets and soloists with Hope Fitness Ministries Dance Team, Essence Ministry Caribbean Band, Little Blessings praise dancers, and Elder Al Matlock Jr. of the Mellowaires.
Then, on Feb. 26, the public is invited to a Black Love Panel Discussion at Kerney Hall at 5 p.m.
Finally, on Feb. 27, the West Windsor Campus will host the Closing Ceremony from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Lieutenant Governor Sheila Oliver will be the keynote speaker, and the service will feature cuisine prepared by Mercer Staff, as well as an African Drumming presentation by MCCC staff and friends.
Black History Month at Mercer is presented by the MCCC Black History Committee and the American Association for Women in Community Colleges (AAWCC). Many events are open to the public.
