Free Hip-Hop Workshop February 24 and 26 at Mercer County Community College

Open to Mercer County residents age 16 and up. New hip-hop curriculum to begin in the fall.

2/22/2023

West Windsor – To celebrate its new hip-hop dance curriculum beginning in the Fall of 2023, the Mercer County Community College (MCCC) Dance Ensemble will host a free “Hip-Hop Intensive Workshop” on Friday, February 24 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and on Sunday, February 26 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The workshop will be held at the college’s West Windsor campus at 1200 Old Trenton Road in the physical education building, room PE203. Registration is required.

The free workshop is open to Mercer County residents age 16 and up who would like to learn the latest hip-hop dance moves. No previous dance experience is necessary. Taught by Professor Theresa Flim, participants will learn the moves and then learn how to put them all together in a 3-hour class.

Creator of the program, MCCC Theatre Program Coordinator Professor Jody Gazenbeek-Person, expressed his excitement about the new addition of hip-hop to Mercer County Community College’s roster of dance choices.

“We want hip-hop to become a mainstay in the college’s Fall 2023 dance curriculum and beyond as part of MCCC’s commitment to furthering DEI, education, and the future of dance at the college,” said Gazenbeek-Person. “And I am happy to welcome our talented dance instructor, Theresa Flim, a pillar of the Mercer County dance scene, who will join me in embarking on this new dance journey,” Gazenbeek-Person said.

In addition to the workshop and new curriculum, hip-hop will also be showcased as part of the Dance Ensemble’s new production, “The Shadow Men,” from April 14  through 16 at MCCC’s Kelsey Theatre. The hip-hop infused show, produced by Jody Gazenbeek-Person and Kitty Getlik, takes the audience inside the mind of the artist, and exposes the issues faced when creating art. The cast features Mercer County Community College students, staff, faculty, alumni and dancers who all come together to tell their stories, sway emotions and weave a spell with music and movement.
