4/18/2022

Trenton, N.J. — “Third Thursdays,” the popular monthly photography presentation and artist talk series at Mercer County Community College’s (MCCC’s) James Kerney Campus Gallery (JKCG) at 137 North Broad Street in Trenton, will take place April 21, 2022 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The event, curated by Heather Palecek and Habiyb Shu’Aib, will feature work by Krista Svalbonas and Eddie Einbender-Luks. The talk will be hosted by Michael Chovan-Dalton, director of the JKC Gallery, and will take place live and on the Zoom conferencing platform. All are invited to register at jkcgallery.online.

Professor Chovan-Calton remarked, “The JKC Gallery has another great pairing of two photographers who document humanity and the world around them in very distinct ways. We look forward to welcoming Krista Svalbonas and Eddie Einbender-Luks.”

About the Artists

Krista Svalbonas credits her cultural background as ethnically Latvian/Lithuanian for her a longstanding interest in architecture, particularly urban environments.

Svalbonas explained, “My parents spent many years after the end of World War II in displaced-person camps in Germany before they were allowed to emigrate to the United States. Their childhood memories were of temporary structures, appropriated from other (often military) uses to house tens of thousands of postwar refugees. I am fascinated by the language of spatial relationships and by the effect of architectural form and structure on the psychology of the human environment. My connection to this history has made me acutely aware of the impact of politics on architecture, and, in turn, on a people’s daily lived experience.”

Eddie Einbender-Luks entered his life as a photographer by means of a small 35mm film camera. His camera and the analog process presented him with a new way to look at the world. His photos strive to reflect back to us our collective humanity and show us the strength of the human family.

Einbender-Luks sees photography from concept to the final print as “an expression of joy as well as a way to revisit moments distilled in time.”

Einbender-Luks explores daily life and human emotions. In his Third Thursdays presentation, Eddie will explore early analog work made in Philadelphia that helped shape his photographic sense, highlighting his time spent with a Cuban-Haitian folkloric troupe and the joy they experience through music and a parade, and his recent a trip to Ukraine to visit a friend who lived in Kyiv.
