This is the last week to check out "Mercer County Artists 2019" at the MCCC Gallery. Artwork by 36 artists is on display through July 8, including "Goldfinches" by MCCC alumna Megan Serfass, who won Best in Show. Congratulations to all of the artists who were selected. "Crazy for You," the quintessential American musical, is coming to Kelsey Theatre July 12 to 21. This 1992 Tony Award winner for Best Musical will be presented by M&M Stage Productions. It's a high-energy romp by Ken Ludwig, adapted from the 1930 hit "Girl Crazy” with lyrics and music by George and Ira Gershwin. Read more here.
Young people looking for an immersive experience in jazz music this summer should head straight to MCCC’s downtown campus. MCCC presents its 2019 “Summer Jazz Institute,” a master class for high school and college students from July 29 to August 2, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The week concludes with a concert and opening reception at the JKC Gallery on Aug. 2. In a major budget victory for community college students statewide, the New Jersey Legislature has not only approved second-year funding for the Community College Opportunity Grant (CCOG) program, but has raised the amount to $25 million, along with $5 million for “capacity-building grants” to be appropriated directly to all 19 colleges. Additionally, the Legislature’s budget raised the Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) for eligibility to $65,000 from the current $45,000, and now covers dependent students who are attending college part-time, as well as fees for nursing, culinary, and other career and technical education programs. Construction vehicles began lining MCCC's baseball field in June, as the Athletics Department got the green light to start a month-long renovation to convert the infield to turf. The project was two years in the making, according to Athletics Director John Simone. “We got the okay to start construction in January 2019 and five months later, here we are,” said Simone, adding that the MCCC Foundation loaned the Athletics Department the funding to complete the venture. At the Women of Achievement Awards Breakfast on June 20, the Princeton Mercer Regional Chamber honored Jigna Rao, Director of MCCC's Center for Continuing Studies. Starting out as a young entrepreneur in India, Rao has used that spirit to advance in her career and says that working at MCCC to strengthen the business community is "an experience I cherish." When alumnus Qaysean Williams (A.A.S., Fashion Merchandising) was a student at Mercer, he was already creating iconic fashions, most notably a shoe collection that glittered and glowed. The designer continues to make waves with a wide variety of signature clothing and footwear. And people, some of them famous(!), have taken note. Read about his recent success and current solo exhibit in a feature story in The Trentonian here.
MCCC’s Upward Bound program recognized the Class of 2019 during a special ceremony in May. Staff members celebrated the achievements of 27 graduating high school seniors, most of whom have been in the program for the past four years. A total of 89 ninth through twelfth graders participated this year. Read more here.
For those of you who missed Shakespeare '70's "Macbeth," which ran for the past two weekends at Kelsey Theatre, here's some background on the show and the renowned company that presented it. They visit Kelsey Theatre only once a year, so mark your calendars for 2020 when Shakespeare '70 returns with " Two Gentleman of Verona" May 22 to 31. View the Macbeth video here.
