"Crazy for You," the quintessential American musical, returns to Kelsey Theatre for its final three performances July 19 to 21. This 1992 Tony Award winner for Best Musical will be presented by M&M Stage Productions. It's a high-energy romp by Ken Ludwig, adapted from the 1930 hit "Girl Crazy” with lyrics and music by George and Ira Gershwin. Read more here.
The perfect family musical, "Tom Sawyer," comes to MCCC’s Kelsey Theatre for two weekends July 26 to Aug. 4. This highly imaginative theatrical adaptation of the Mark Twain classic will be presented by The Yardley Players. It follows 14-year-old Tom Sawyer, growing up in the Missouri heartland circa 1840. Young people looking for an immersive experience in jazz music this summer should head straight to JKC for the 2019 “Summer Jazz Institute,” a master class for high school and college students from July 29 to August 2, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The week concludes with a concert and opening reception at the JKC Gallery on Aug. 2. In a major budget victory for community college students statewide, the New Jersey Legislature has not only approved second-year funding for the Community College Opportunity Grant program, but has raised the amount to $25 million, along with $5 million for “capacity-building grants” to be appropriated directly to all 19 colleges. Additionally, the Legislature’s budget raised the Adjusted Gross Income for eligibility to $65,000 from the current $45,000, and now covers dependent students who are attending college part-time, as well as fees for nursing, culinary, and other career and technical education programs. Revitalization of long-dormant buildings in downtown Trenton, and the conversion of them to classroom and community space, has earned Mercer a 2019 Smart Growth Award from New Jersey Future. In total, four buildings on North Broad Street were targeted for redevelopment, with a fifth leased building given new life as a center for health-related programs and training. Read more here.
Three science professors have written a lab manual that goes a long way to assisting non-science, pre-biology, and pre-allied health students improve their science literacy. Now, those professors are sharing their manual with the world via the Open Textbook Network. Read more here.
Erin Cahill-Wetzel, Coordinator of Mercer County Community College’s (MCCC) Fitness Center and Swimming Pool and Strength and Conditioning Coach, was inducted into the Hun School’s Athletic Hall of Fame this spring. Cahill-Wetzel became a local star at Hun, where she broke school, and area records across basketball, cross country and softball. Read more here.
The baseball team is slated to return to a new turf field this September and October as the team has announced its Fall 2019 practice season schedule. The Vikings will square off against county teams, as well NCAA Division I, II and III programs. Read more here.
