The Mercer County Symphonic Band presents its annual Spring Concert on Wednesday, June 12, at 7:30 p.m. at Kelsey Theatre. Admission is free. The performance features a variety of music, ranging from three Soviet composers to marches made famous by the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus and selections from Spanish composers inspired by matadors and romance. An eclectic group of overachieving tweens are set to compete in the spelling bee of their young lives. Maurer Productions OnStage presents the comical and endearing “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” complete with audience participation, for three final performances June 14 to 16. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will present a seminar entitled "Until Help Arrives" in two three-hour sessions on Monday, June 17 from 9 a.m. to noon and from 6 to 9 p.m. The goal of the seminar is to train the general public on how to best handle a critical incident until emergency services arrive. Both sessions will be held at Princeton University, 701 Carnegie Center. See the flyer here.
Next Monday, miniature humans will take over the West Windsor campus with the beginning of the summer camp season! From June 17 through Aug. 16, MCCC will once again open its West Windsor Campus to children and teens ages 6 to 17. Registration has been brisk, but there are still some openings for summer fun in Camp College, Sports Camps and Tomato Patch Visual and Performing Arts Workshops. Read more here.
Shakespeare ’70 returns to MCCC’s Kelsey Theatre for its annual tribute to The Bard. This year the celebrated company presents “Macbeth,” taking theater goers into a world where "fair is foul, and foul is fair." Read more here.
There was gratitude all around as the James Kerney Campus (JKC) held its 31st annual Celebration of Academic Achievement on June 3. Eighty students from programs including High School Equivalency, Trenton Makes, English Language Institute and Career Training Institute received certificates of completion and are now ready to take the next steps in their lives. Four students and guest speaker Brad Butler, an MCCC alumnus, shared their journeys with the audience. Read more here.
One week wasn’t enough. MCCC travelers felt as much after spending a week in Ireland as part of the college’s Study Tours program. The group reconvened at the college on June 3 to reflect on what they learned. Accompanying the students on the trip were Elizabeth Mizerek, Director of Nursing, and Professors Lisa Dunn (Nursing), Linda Falkow (Biology), and Sandra Kerr (Radiography), as well as community members. The Health Professions Student Success Center opened earlier this spring, giving students in 10 different programs a quiet place for individual and group work and group study sessions. Located on the first floor of the MS Building (MS159), the room is equipped with numerous long tables and chairs, a bank of computers, instruments such as a blood pressure cuffs and reflex hammers, and much more. Dozens of MCCC alumni celebrated their second undergraduate milestone: earning their bachelor’s degree through the William Paterson University (WPU) at Mercer program. During a May 10 ceremony at the Conference Center, 42 graduates were recognized as family and friends looked on. Read more here.
Just four years ago, Jason Lima enrolled at Mercer unsure of his direction. After two productive years studying Business Administration at Mercer, Lima transfered to Rider University to major in Global Supply Chain Management. As part of his Rider program requirements, he completed a year-long internship at Johnson & Johnson and was one of just five Rider grads to be hired by the company. Alumna Megan Serfass '18 (A.S.S., Illustration) says that MCCC was the perfect place to grow as an artist. She proved that growth as the Best in Show winner at this year's Mercer County Artists exhibit, on display through July 8 at the Gallery at Mercer. She gives all of her art classes high marks. “I liked every one of my professors,” she said. “They allowed students to explore their strengths and helped us when we needed it. Classes were small and professors would work with each student individually. Read more here.
After starting the season 6-8, including some lopsided losses at the Fast Pitch Dream Softball Tournament in Myrtle Beach in March, the women's softball team settled down into a winning pattern. The Lady Vikings combined for a 20-12 record to finish the year, including a 7-1 run to end the season. Read more about their season here.
The men’s basketball team set milestones throughout the 2018-19 season. At 19-10, the Vikings notched more wins than in any of the last four seasons. The Vikings' efforts culminated in a 12-2 region record, and a berth in the Region 19 tournament. Though they eventually fell to Lackawanna in the tournament, there were many reasons to celebrate these student athletes as a team and for their individual contributions. Read more here.

Continue to Spread the Word about Free Tuition Through State Program (CCOG). Employees are asked to continue to spread the word to family and friends about the state's new Community College Opportunity Grants (CCOG).
The program, which was launched this spring, provides "free tuition" for students whose household income does not exceed $45,000. It is part of Governor Murphy's 2020 budget proposal, to be voted on by the state legislature by July 1. With passage, students who qualify will receive free tuition for the fall semester.
