College Assembly and Employee Recognition May 16

All employees are invited and encouraged to attend the College Assembly and 42nd Annual Employee and Retirees Recognition Ceremony, which will be held on Thursday, May 16, beginning at 9:30 a.m. in Kelsey Theatre. Coffee will be served in the theatre lobby starting at 9 a.m. All employees celebrating 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, or 45-year milestones will be recognized, with a program that includes updates on steps taken based on suggestions at the January College Assembly, and the election of College Assembly co-chairs for the 2019-2020 academic year. Immediately following the program, all employees are invited to a barbecue luncheon on the quad. See you there!

'Inherit the Wind' Blows Into Kelsey Theatre May 24 to June 2

In the 1920s, a Tennessee schoolteacher is put on trial for teaching Darwin’s Theory of Evolution. Forte Dramatic Productions presents the acclaimed play “Inherit the Wind” at Kelsey Theatre May 24 through June 2. The community is invited to an opening night reception with the cast and crew on May 24. Read more here.

HRIM Breakfast Class Opens For Business May 22

As we all know -- breakfast is the most important meal of the day! Beginning with the summer semester on May 22, the HRIM Breakfast Class will be serving a variety of early morning foods in ES111, designed to get your day off right. All menu items are a la carte, with prices starting at $3, with an upcharge for additional items, such as baked goods, juices, etc. The menu is subject to change, so be sure to check the HRIM website for details at www.mccc.edu/hrim. The Breakfast Class will be serving Wednesday, May 22 through Friday, May 24, and Tuesday, May 28 through Friday, May 31. Service is from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., but if capacity is reached, it is possible the doors may close early -- first come, first served. So visit early, and visit often!

Scholarship Deadline for 2019-2020 Is May 31

Please remind your students that Foundation scholarships are still available for the 2019-2020 academic year. The deadline to apply is May 31. Students must complete an online application at https://mccc.awardspring.com. (The link can be found at www.mccc.edu/scholarships.) Foundation staff members are ready to assist students with the process. Students should call (609) 570-3607, email scholarships@mccc.edu, or stop by AD112, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, with any questions. All students are encouraged to apply.

MCCC's Class of 2019 Prepares for Commencement on May 17

On Friday, May 17 on the West Windsor Campus quad (weather permitting!), MCCC will celebrate the graduation of nearly 1,000 students -- some earning multiple degrees. MCCC students are a truly special group, demonstrating perseverance, learning how to manage their time, and succeeding, often in the face of significant challenges. Mercer Hosts State Roundtable on CCOG, College Affordability

As part of an ongoing effort to support student success, MCCC hosted Dr. Zakiya Smith Ellis, Secretary of Higher Education, and other state officials for one leg of the 2019 Garden State Graduation Tour. The tour, which consists of a series of college visits and events, is designed to spur discussions about college affordability. At Mercer, the conversation focused on New Jersey's Community College Opportunity Grants (CCOG) and other programs that assist students with tuition. Read more here.

Honors Organic Chemistry Students Mix Science and Art

During the time of year when MCCC students were busy preparing for final exams, nowhere was that preparation more intense than for students taking Honors Organic Chemistry. So “orgo” students had a nice change of pace in one of their final lab assignments -- turning science into art. Read more here.

Alpha Mu Gamma Honor Society Inducts 17 Students

The MCCC Kappa Iota chapter of the Alpha Mu Gamma Foreign Language Honors Society celebrated the induction of 17 students during the 35th anniversary induction ceremony on April 26. Inductees were recognized for their accomplishments in foreign launguage study, which included Spanish, German and American Sign Language. Read more here.

Holocaust Center Relates Tragic History to Current Events For Yom HaShoah

On Thursday, May 2, the Holocaust, Genocide and Human Rights Education Center at MCCC observed Yom HaShoah with a ceremony to remember those who perished in the Holocaust of World War Two. The center was crowded with students and community members, among them five students who departed May 10 to travel to Poland as part of MCCC’s study tour that includes visits to the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentrations camps in Oswiecim. Reminders

June 17: FEMA Emergency Response Seminar. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will present a seminar entitled "Until Help Arrives" in two three-hour sessions on Monday, June 17 from 9 a.m. to noon and from 6 to 9 p.m. The goal of the seminar is to train the general public on how to best handle a critical incident until emergency services arrive. Both sessions will be held at Princeton University, 701 Carnegie Center. See the flyer here.

Through Summer: Camp Registration Underway. From June 17 through Aug. 16, MCCC will once again open its West Windsor Campus to children and teens ages 6 to 17. Registration is currently under way for a diverse list of camp and workshop offerings designed to pique the interests of just about every child. Read more here.

Continue to Spread the Word about Free Tuition Through State Program (CCOG). Employees are asked to continue to spread the word to family and friends about the state's new Community College Opportunity Grants (CCOG). The program, which was launched this spring, provides "free tuition" for students whose household income does not exceed $45,000. It is part of Governor Murphy's 2020 budget proposal, to be voted on by the state legislature by July 1. With passage, students who qualify will receive free tuition for the fall semester.
