"Combatting Opioid Epidemic” Is Lecture Topic April 9

As part of the Distinguished Lecture Series, Kathleen Petrucci, Chief of the Special Investigations Unit/Mercer County Narcotics Task Force, will discuss "Combatting the Opioid Epidemic: The Overdose Prevention Act and Narcan” at noon on Tuesday, April 9 in the Communications Building, Room 110. Zumba, Yoga Schedule This Week

Due to ongoing renovations in the gym, tomorrow's zumba class will be moved outdoors on the quad, weather permitting. A location for yoga has not yet been determined. Email Jenn Eng in Student Life and Leadership at engj@mccc.edu or call ext. 3435 for updates.

Spring Transfer Day Is April 9

Encourage your students to think about their life after Mercer. The Transfer and Career Services office hosts its Spring Transfer Day on Tuesday, April 9, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., on the second floor of the Student Center. Approximately 50 four-year schools will be represented.

JKC to Host Health Fair April 10

The James Kerney Campus will host its annual Health Fair on Wednesday, April 10, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Kerney Hall (KC229). Visitors are invited to stop by to meet representatives from area organizations committed to a healthy lifestyle. Attendees will be able to learn about available health services, receive various free health screenings, and gain knowledge about health and wellness. The event is open to the public. 'Politics of Natural Gas Pipeline Expansion' Is Sierra Club Topic April 10

The Sierra Club presents "The Politics of Natural Gas Pipeline Expansion: Defining the Structure and Process of Information Diffusion within the Stop PennEast Opposition Movement" on Wednesday, April 10. Pizza is at 6 p.m., with the program to follow at 6:30. The presenter is Rider University Professor Dr. Michael J. Brogan. In previous work, Brogan has evaluated political views of risk and safety in natural gas pipelines. The talk will be held in CM 109. (Note different location). 'The Holocaust in Greece' Is Lecture Topic April 10

The Holocaust, Genocide and Human Rights Education Center invites the college community to the lecture "The Holocaust in Greece," by Marcia Haddad Ikonomopolus. The talk will be held on Wednesday, April 10 at 7 p.m. in the Holocaust Center, located next to the bookstore. See the full calendar of spring events here.

‘Explore Mercer’ at MCCC Open House April 10

Share the news with relatives, neighbors and friends. MCCC hosts its "Explore Mercer" Open House for prospective students, their parents, and adults interested in enhancing their job skills on Wednesday, April 10, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Student Center on the West Windsor Campus. Faculty, staff, and students will be available to provide information about Mercer’s 76 degree programs and 30 certificate programs. Visitors will also get information about financial aid, special services, and more. Read about it here.

NJ City University Ed.D. Program Info Session April 11

MCCC faculty, staff, and administrators are invited to join Dr. Christine Harrington and Dr. John Melendez on Thursday, April 11 from 4 to 5 p.m. in CM110 for an information session on New Jersey City University's new Ed.D. in Community College Leadership that begins this summer. This practice-focused 55-credit online program with a one-week summer residency requirement is designed to be completed by working professionals in three years. For more information, click here.

McCarter Theater to Host Auditions for 'A Christmas Carol' at JKC April 12

McCarter Theatre Center is hosting auditions for the community ensemble of its annual performance of “A Christmas Carol.” Group auditions for people ages 14 and up will take place at JKC in Kerney Hall on Friday, April 12, 6 to 7:30 p.m.  All are welcome. No experience or preparation is required. Selected ensemble members will be in the lobby before the show to welcome and engage with the audience, and then perform alongside the professional acting company to fill the streets of London, dance with the Fezziwigs, carol at Scrooge’s doorstep, and bring Christmas cheer to every corner of the theater. Auditions are open to people of all ages, physical abilities, races, genders, and levels of experience. More information is available at mccarter.org/communityensemble.  

Music Faculty Recital to Benefit Student Scholarships April 12

Faculty members from the Music Department will present the their first-ever recital at MCCC on Friday, April 12 in CM156. The performance is sponsored by the Music Club to raise funds for a scholarship(s) to be given out to Music student(s) by the club. Doors open at 7 p.m. with the show starting at 7:30 pm. The Music Club will have baked goods for sale. Among the performers are Liz Rzasa, Josh Wilson, Ann-Marie Pocklembo, Mark Juricisn, Jim Holton, Joe Falcey, Elizabeth Scardino, and Scott Hornick, coordinator of the Music program. The event is open to the public. A donation to help fund the scholarship is encouraged.

Mercer Co. Parks Seek Summer Interns; Rep to Speak April 16

Spread the word to students. The Mercer County Park Commission is offering 12 short-term summer internships for students interested in horticulture, environmental education, golf course maintenance, and land stewardship. Wanda McNeil, the commission's director of community outreach, will present information about these opportunities on Tuesday, April 16 from noon to 1 p.m. in CM107. Light refreshments will be served. Internship sites include the Stables in Pennington, the Wildlife Center in Titusville, Howell Living History Farm in Hopewell, the Tennis Center, Mercer Oaks Golf Course, and Ranger Headquarters. 'Academic Advising in Era of Instant Gratification' Is Webinar Topic April 18

The Health Profession Division/Center for Teaching and Learning presents an NACADA Webinar entitled "Academic Advising in an Era of Instant Gratification: The Pathway to Empowerment" on Thursday, April 18 from noont to 1 p.m. in MS204. Mercer Night at Trenton Thunder April 26

The Student Life and Leadership office is selling tickets for a Trenton Thunder baseball game versus Erie, which takes place Friday, April 26, starting at 7 p.m. Tickets are $5 each. There is no limit on tickets, which can be purchased in the Student Life and Leadership office (SC111). Tickets are good for game admission only. (Food and transportation are not included.) FEMA Emergency Response Seminar to Be Held June 17

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will present a seminar entitled "Until Help Arrives" in two three-hour sessions on Monday, June 17 from 9 a.m. to noon and from 6 to 9 p.m. The goal of the seminar is to train the general public on how to best handle a critical incident until emergency services arrive. Both sessions will be held at Princeton University, 701 Carnegie Center. See the flyer here.

Student Victoria Fredrick and Mercer's PTK Chapter Recognized

Nursing student and Phi Theta Kappa officer Victoria Fredrick received national recognition for her efforts this year. She was selected from more than 2,000 applicants as a 2019 New Century Workforce Pathway Scholar. The program is sponsored by the Coca-Cola Foundation with additional support from PTK International. Awards Season for MCCC's College VOICE Student Newspaper

The awards just keep on coming for MCCC's student newspaper, The College VOICE, marking yet another year of journalistic excellence. After receiving three finalist awards from the Society of Professional Journalists in early March, The VOICE staff recently got more good news. In a competition sponsored by the New Jersey Collegiate Press Association, VOICE staffers won 17 awards, surpassing their previous record of 16 from last year. The awards include the top honor of General Excellence in the two-year college division, as well as Best Overall Website. Read more about their success here.

Criminal Justice Alumnae Discuss Realities of Women in Law Enforcement

In a panel discussion featuring three women in law enforcement, two of whom are MCCC alumnae, current students learned about the realities women face in the male-dominated field of policing. Tara Russ and Brittney Fornarotto noted that proving you are up to the job is still required of women. Despite the challenges, they both say they love their jobs. Read more here.

MCCC and Drexel Sign Transfer Agreement for Online Learning

MCCC students, alumni, employees, and their immediate families now have new options to continue their college education at a reduced cost through an agreement with Drexel University Online. MCCC President Jianping Wang and Drexel Online President Susan Aldridge signed a Letter of Understanding on April 4 outlining the partnership, which provides for discounts of up to 40 percent for Drexel Online courses. Paige Metz might be a freshman on the softball team, but she is quickly rising through the leadership ranks. Though the Lady Vikings’ roster tilts heavily towards first-year players – 10 of 14 to be exact – Metz has emerged as one of the team’s trailblazers. Read more here.

April 10: Wawa Leadership Program Info Session. Are your students interested in pursuing a career in management? Wawa is accepting applicants for its College Graduate Leadership Program and will hold an information session on Wednesday, April 10, starting at 10 a.m. in SC201. Wawa representatives will be available from 10 to 11 a.m. for a meet-and-greet and for resume assistance, with a leadership program presentation from noon to 1 p.m. Refreshments will be served. Through April 10: Tax Prep Assistance. MCCC, in cooperation with United Way of Greater Mercer County and the IRS Voluntary Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, continues to offer free tax return preparation on Wednesdays through April 10 in SC104, 2 to 6 p.m. See the flyer here.

April 11 to May 9: JKC Gallery Presents ‘Orpheus Looked’ April 11 to May 9; Artist Talk Is April 17. The James Kerney Campus Gallery will showcase works by Rachel Stern in the exhibit "Orpheus Looked." The show runs from Thursday, April 11 to Thursday, May 9. The community is invited to a reception and artist talk with Stern on Wednesday, April 17 from 5 to 7 p.m. The talk starts at 6 p.m. Stern's "Orpheus Looked" explores the classical narratives on tragedy and power in a way that allows the viewer to enter and reexamine these tales through the use of contemporary construction. April 11: Health Professions Info Session. Current and prospective students interested in learning about health profession degree programs, requirements, employment opportunities, career paths, the application process, and more can do so at information session on Thursday, April 11 at 5 p.m. in MS172. Through April 25: Visual Arts Student Exhibition. A treat for the eye awaits as The Gallery at Mercer hosts the "2019 Visual Arts Student Art Exhibition," on display through Thursday, April 25. The show features the best work by MCCC students studying Fine Arts, Advertising and Graphic Design, Digital Arts, Photography and Sculpture. Gallery hours are Mondays through Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with Wednesday hours extended until 7 p.m. Read more here.

Through May 13: Lunch at Student Restaurants. The MCCC student restaurant is open for Monday lunches through May 13. The International Café will serve cuisines from around the world, featuring menus that change each week. The Grinning Bobcat restaurant will serve Wednesday lunch on April 10 and April 17. See the menus and purchase tickets online here. Tickets for faculty and staff are just $10. (Monday evening dinners at The Viking Cafe are already sold out for the semester!)

Tee Up For MCCC Golf League! Employees, regardless of level of play, are invited to join the MCCC Golf League. The league meets at the Princeton Country Club and many other courses, playing nine holes of golf each week from April through September, culminating with an end-of-year tournament and banquet. The league plays on Wednesdays, with tee times at 4 and 4:30 p.m. League members unable to play at those times can play other days and times, provided at least one other league member plays in the round. There is a $50 league registration fee; greens fee for the weekly Wednesday tee time at Princeton Country Club are $14. From Monise Princilus, Executive Director of Human Resources and Compliance: As part of our Strategic Plan, the college committed to investing in organizational and professional effectiveness, and we are continually looking for ways to maximize our internal resources to bring you opportunities for training and development. Through Summer: Camp Registration Underway. From June 17 through Aug. 16, MCCC will once again open its West Windsor Campus to children and teens ages 6 to 17. Registration is currently under way for a diverse list of camp and workshop offerings designed to pique the interests of just about every child. Read more here.

Exercise Classes for Spring: Yoga classes are held on Mondays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in PE225 and on Wednesdays, from noon to 1 p.m. in the gym. Zumba classes are on Tuesdays from noon to 1 p.m. in the gym. Presented by Student Life and Leadership, classes are free and open to both students and staff.

Continue to Spread the Word about Free Tuition Through New State Program (CCOG). Employees are asked to continue to spread the word to family and friends about the state's new Community College Opportunity Grant (CCOG). Also consider passing this information along to churches and community organizations for their newsletters, announcements, and information racks. Hard copies of the flyer are available in the AD Executive Suite, at the Information Desk at the JKC Student Commons, and at the Admissions and Financial Aid suites in the Student Center.
