Rola Khayyat, a Lebanese artist and curator based in Brooklyn, will deliver the lecture "The Jewish Diaspora from Lebanon to Brooklyn" on Tuesday, April 23 at noon in CM109. The talk is part of the MCCC Distinguished Lecture Series. Read more here.
Volunteers are needed for this year's "Take Your Child to Work Day," to be held April 25 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Duties include escorting children to and from each scheduled activity, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., on both the West Windsor and James Kerney campuses. Those interested can click here to complete a survey and indicate location and times available.
The Student Life and Leadership office is selling tickets for a Trenton Thunder baseball game versus Erie, which takes place Friday, April 26, starting at 7 p.m. Tickets are $5 each. There is no limit on tickets, which can be purchased in the Student Life and Leadership office (SC111). Tickets are good for game admission only. (Food and transportation are not included.) It’s time to blast off for good time as MCCC’s Academic Theater and Dance program presents the campy jukebox musical “Return to the Forbidden Planet.” This cult classic comes to Kelsey Theatre Fridays, April 26 and May 3 at 8 p.m.; Saturdays, April 27 and May 4 at 8 p.m.; and Sundays, April 28 and May 5 at 2 p.m. Read more here.
MCCC once again has a table at Communiversity in Princeton! Communiversity, to be held Sunday, April 28 from 1 to 6 p.m., is a street fair in downtown Princeton, attracting thousands of participants and is a great opportunity to get the MCCC message out to a very wide and diverse audience. Volunteers are needed to help staff the table from 3 to 6 p.m. and to assist with clean up through 6:30 p.m. (someone with a truck or van would be greatly appreciated!) If you cannot make it but have materials you would like distributed for your department or program, you may drop them off at Ilyndove Healy’s office (AD133) by Friday afternoon. The MCCC Medical Office Assistant program is holding a series of information session in MS204, where participants can learn about exclusive opportunities in the field with area employers. An evening of unique fashions and high style awaits as the Fashion Design and Fashion Merchandising programs at MCCC present their annual Fashion Showcase and Runway Show. Trenton Hall on the James Kerney Campus will light up with glamour on Friday, May 3, starting at 6:30 p.m. Read more here.
Calling all artists! Artists age 18 or older who live, work, or attend school in Mercer County are invited to submit their art for consideration for the “Mercer County Artists 2019” exhibition at The Gallery at Mercer on the West Windsor Campus. Artists may enter up to two original works completed since May 2017 in any media except photography. An entry fee of $10 for one piece and $15 for two must accompany entries. More than $ 1,000 in purchase and merit prizes will be awarded. The submission period begins with early drop-off on Thursday, May 9, noon to 3 p.m., followed by Saturday drop-off on May 11, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Judging takes place on Sunday, May 12 at 10 a.m. Read more here.
Once again this year, a group of Fine Arts alumni from MCCC will present "Mercer Family and Friends" at the Lawrence Headquarters Branch of the Mercer County Library System. Featured artists include Clara Sue Beym, John A. Brecko, Jr., Connie Cruser, Giancarla Macaluso, Bill Plank, Helene Plank, Margaret Simpson and Margaret Woo. Read more here.
The Vikings baseball team has been unstoppable when pitcher Ronnie Voacolo is on the mound. The sophomore has pitched in four Region 19 games this season, three of which were starts. All three resulted in wins for the Vikings and helped the team to a second place record in the region. Read more here.
Through April 25: Visual Arts Student Exhibition. A treat for the eye awaits as The Gallery at Mercer hosts the "2019 Visual Arts Student Exhibition," on display through Thursday, April 25. The show features the best work by MCCC students studying Fine Arts, Advertising and Graphic Design, Digital Arts, Photography and Sculpture. Gallery hours are Mondays through Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with Wednesday hours extended until 7 p.m. Read more here.
Through May 9: "Orpheus Looked" at the JKC Gallery. Rachel Stern's photography exhibit "Orpheus Looked" explores the classical narratives on tragedy and power in a way that allows the viewer to enter and reexamine these tales through the use of contemporary construction. Read more here.
Through May 13: Lunch at Student Restaurants. The MCCC student restaurant is open for Monday lunches through May 13. The International Café will serve cuisines from around the world, featuring menus that change each week. See the menus and purchase tickets online here. Tickets for faculty and staff are just $10. (Wednesday lunch at The Grinning Bobcat and Monday evening dinners at The Viking Cafe are already sold out for the semester!)
June 17: FEMA Emergency Response Seminar. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will present a seminar entitled "Until Help Arrives" in two three-hour sessions on Monday, June 17 from 9 a.m. to noon and from 6 to 9 p.m. The goal of the seminar is to train the general public on how to best handle a critical incident until emergency services arrive. Both sessions will be held at Princeton University, 701 Carnegie Center. See the flyer here.
Tee Up For MCCC Golf League! Employees, regardless of level of play, are invited to join the MCCC Golf League. The league meets at the Princeton Country Club and many other courses, playing nine holes of golf each week from April through September, culminating with an end-of-year tournament and banquet. The league plays on Wednesdays, with tee times at 4 and 4:30 p.m. League members unable to play at those times can play other days and times, provided at least one other league member plays in the round. There is a $50 league registration fee; greens fee for the weekly Wednesday tee time at Princeton Country Club are $14. Through Summer: Camp Registration Underway. From June 17 through Aug. 16, MCCC will once again open its West Windsor Campus to children and teens ages 6 to 17. Registration is currently under way for a diverse list of camp and workshop offerings designed to pique the interests of just about every child. Read more here.
Exercise Classes for Spring: Yoga classes are held on Mondays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in PE225 and on Wednesdays, from noon to 1 p.m. in the gym. Zumba classes are on Tuesdays from noon to 1 p.m. in the gym. Presented by Student Life and Leadership, classes are free and open to both students and staff.
Continue to Spread the Word about Free Tuition Through State Program (CCOG). Employees are asked to continue to spread the word to family and friends about the state's new Community College Opportunity Grant (CCOG).
The program, which was launched this spring, provides "free tuition" for students whose household income does not exceed $45,000. It is part of Governor Murphy's 2020 budget proposal, to be voted on by the state legislature by July 1. With passage, students who qualify will receive free tuition for the fall semester.
