Spread the word to students. The Mercer County Park Commission is offering 12 short-term summer internships for students interested in horticulture, environmental education, golf course maintenance, and land stewardship. Wanda McNeil, the commission's director of community outreach, will present information about these opportunities on Tuesday, April 16 from noon to 1 p.m. in CM107. Light refreshments will be served. Internship sites include the Stables in Pennington, the Wildlife Center in Titusville, Howell Living History Farm in Hopewell, the Tennis Center, Mercer Oaks Golf Course, and Ranger Headquarters. A community reception and artist talk for the Rachel Stern photography exhibit "Orpheus Looked" will be held on Wednesday, April 17 from 5 to 7 p.m at the James Kerney Campus Gallery in Trenton. The talk starts at 6 p.m. Stern's "Orpheus Looked" explores the classical narratives on tragedy and power in a way that allows the viewer to enter and reexamine these tales through the use of contemporary construction. The Health Professions Division/Center for Teaching and Learning presents an NACADA webinar entitled "Academic Advising in an Era of Instant Gratification: The Pathway to Empowerment" on Thursday, April 18 from noon to 1 p.m. in MS204. Rola Khayyat, a Lebanese artist and curator based in Brooklyn, will deliver the lecture "The Jewish Diaspora from Lebanon to Brooklyn" on Tuesday, April 23 at noon in CM109. The talk is part of the MCCC Distinguished Lecture Series. Read more here.
Volunteers are needed for this year's "Take Your Child to Work Day," to be held April 25 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Duties include escorting children to and from each scheduled activity, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., on both the West Windsor and James Kerney campuses. The Student Life and Leadership office is selling tickets for a Trenton Thunder baseball game versus Erie, which takes place Friday, April 26, starting at 7 p.m. Tickets are $5 each. There is no limit on tickets, which can be purchased in the Student Life and Leadership office (SC111). Tickets are good for game admission only. (Food and transportation are not included.) Calling all artists! Artists age 18 or older who live, work, or attend school in Mercer County are invited to submit their art for consideration for the “Mercer County Artists 2019” exhibition at The Gallery at Mercer on the West Windsor Campus. Artists may enter up to two original works completed since May 2017 in any media except photography. An entry fee of $10 for one piece and $15 for two must accompany entries. More than $ 1,000 in purchase and merit prizes will be awarded. The submission period begins with early drop-off on Thursday, May 9, noon to 3 p.m., followed by Saturday drop-off on May 11, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Judging takes place on Sunday, May 12 at 10 a.m. Read more here.
Tables adorned with palm fronds and guests in fedora hats, white suits, and floral dresses set the tone for "A Night in Old Havana," this year's theme for MCCC's signature annual fundraiser to benefit student scholarships. More than 200 guests enjoyed the festivities while helping the college raise a record-breaking $130,000 in proceeds. Read more here.
Six Mercer students were all business at the 2019 New Jersey County College Case Competition at Rutgers Business School on April 5, capturing first prize for their creative, yet practical, business plan for a fledging chocolate company. The competition, now in its fourth year, is sponsored by Rutgers Business School and M&T Bank. Read more here.
Based on her commitment to the expansion and redevelopment of MCCC's James Kerney Campus in Trenton, Mercer President Dr. Jianping Wang has been honored as New Jersey Resident of the Year by the American Institute of Architects-NJ. Read more here.
MCCC sophomore Donovon Guess topped off his award-winning 2018-19 basketball season by earning a spot on the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II All-American Second Team. Guess's season highlights include scoring his 1,000th career point as a Viking, being named to the NJCAA Region 19 First Team, and then again as the Region 19 Player of the Year. Read more here.
Nate Raccagno, a long stick midfielder on the Viking lacrosse team, is making the most of his skill set. Through nine games, Raccagno leads Mercer in ground balls with 51, placing him ninth among all players in the National Junior College Athletic Association. Read more here.
Through April 25: Visual Arts Student Exhibition. A treat for the eye awaits as The Gallery at Mercer hosts the "2019 Visual Arts Student Exhibition," on display through Thursday, April 25. The show features the best work by MCCC students studying Fine Arts, Advertising and Graphic Design, Digital Arts, Photography and Sculpture. Gallery hours are Mondays through Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with Wednesday hours extended until 7 p.m. Read more here.
Through May 13: Lunch at Student Restaurants. The MCCC student restaurant is open for Monday lunches through May 13. The International Café will serve cuisines from around the world, featuring menus that change each week. See the menus and purchase tickets online here. Tickets for faculty and staff are just $10. June 17: FEMA Emergency Response Seminar. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will present a seminar entitled "Until Help Arrives" in two three-hour sessions on Monday, June 17 from 9 a.m. to noon and from 6 to 9 p.m. The goal of the seminar is to train the general public on how to best handle a critical incident until emergency services arrive. Both sessions will be held at Princeton University, 701 Carnegie Center. See the flyer here.
Tee Up For MCCC Golf League! Employees, regardless of level of play, are invited to join the MCCC Golf League. The league meets at the Princeton Country Club and many other courses, playing nine holes of golf each week from April through September, culminating with an end-of-year tournament and banquet. The league plays on Wednesdays, with tee times at 4 and 4:30 p.m. League members unable to play at those times can play other days and times, provided at least one other league member plays in the round. There is a $50 league registration fee; greens fee for the weekly Wednesday tee time at Princeton Country Club are $14. Through Summer: Camp Registration Underway. From June 17 through Aug. 16, MCCC will once again open its West Windsor Campus to children and teens ages 6 to 17. Registration is currently under way for a diverse list of camp and workshop offerings designed to pique the interests of just about every child. Read more here.
Exercise Classes for Spring: Yoga classes are held on Mondays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in PE225 and on Wednesdays, from noon to 1 p.m. in the gym. Zumba classes are on Tuesdays from noon to 1 p.m. in the gym. Presented by Student Life and Leadership, classes are free and open to both students and staff.
Continue to Spread the Word about Free Tuition Through State Program (CCOG). Employees are asked to continue to spread the word to family and friends about the state's new Community College Opportunity Grant (CCOG).
The program, which was launched this spring, provides "free tuition" for students whose household income does not exceed $45,000. It is part of Governor Murphy's 2020 budget proposal, to be voted on by the state legislature by July 1. With passage, students who qualify will receive free tuition for the fall semester.
