Mercer County Community College has structured its Funeral Service programs so that students may attend MCCC for one, two or three years.
Many students enroll in the Funeral Service Preparatory program in order to complete their first 60 college credits as required by the New Jersey and Pennsylvania funeral service licensing boards. Some students do their initial college work at other institutions and then attend MCCC for 1-2 years to take funeral courses only.
MCCC has the oldest accredited* Funeral Service program in New Jersey (there are 58 such programs in the United States).
Students must complete (at MCCC or via transfer) appropriate pre-requisite courses in accounting, chemistry, anatomy, business law, psychology and English composition before they enroll in the Funeral Service courses. These courses can be part of the basic requirement of 60 college credits. This pre-requisite requirement exists for all applicants (even those with Baccalaureate & Master degrees, etc.).
Students also earn college credit while they work in the funeral home setting by enrolling in Funeral Service Internship courses in the Preparatory program (optional) and in Funeral Service Field Experience and Embalming Lab & Practicum in the Certificate and Funeral Service AAS degree program (mandatory).
