Randy Garber (Soccer)

MCCC Athletics Hall of Fame

Randy Garber (’72) has enjoyed an outstanding, more than 50-year association with soccer, as an All-American player at both the junior college and NCAA levels, a member of the U. S. National Team, a professional player, and for more than four decades as a coach, primarily for high school and youth soccer.

A graduate of Abington (PA) Senior High School, Randy was a two-time NJCAA All-American in soccer at Mercer, while playing for the 1971 and 1972 teams under legendary coach and fellow Hall of Fame inductee Stan Dlugosz. Those teams had a combined record of 34-6 over the two seasons and appeared in the national tournament each year. After Mercer he continued his academic and playing career at Pennsylvania State University, where he was selected as an All-American in 1974. He was a member of the U.S. National Team and earned his cap for representing his country in international matches in a game vs Poland in June 1975. He then played professionally (1975-1980) for several teams (primarily the Tampa Bay Rowdies) in the North American Soccer League (NASL) and the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL).

Randy began his soccer coaching career as an assistant at Penn State (1977-1979) and has successfully coached at the varsity high school level in Montgomery County, PA since 1983, including as the Head Coach of Abington Senior High School, his alma mater, from 1994 to the present. He has also been involved in Olympic Development and U-19 boys coaching, and among his many awards was recognition as the 1996 NSCAA youth soccer coach of the year and induction into the Mercer Soccer Hall of Fame in 2008.
