Mercer men's tennis team continued the successful spring season for MCCC Athletics with a trip to the Division III National Championship in Plano, Texas and a fifth place national finish. The Vikings had a strong showing at the Region 19 Tournament hosted by MCCC, where they finished second to eventual National Champion Gloucester CC and ahead of National Championship runner-up Brookdale CC. The highlight for the Vikings came when 1st doubles players Jason Bielski (Ewing, NJ/Parker HS) and Matt Pierson (Princeton, NJ/Montgomery HS) won the National Championship at this flight, earning the two sophomores All-American Honors. Bielski also earned All-American Honors at 2nd Singles, where he was runner-up in that flight championship. Juan Ramirez (Pennington, NJ/Hightstown HS) and Matt Romano (Skillman, NJ/Montgomery HS) capped off a strong season at 3rd Doubles, winning the Region 19 Championships at this flight and finishing as Consolation Champions at the National Championships. Travis McCaughan (Princeton, NJ/Lawrence HS) reached the Consolation Final at 3rd Singles while Ramirez won the Consolation Final at 4th Singles at the National Championship. Ramirez along with freshman Ben Pinter (Florence, NJ/Florence Twp. Memorial HS) earned All-Region Second Team Honors following runner-up finishes at the Region 19 Championships. Pinter had a strong showing at his first National Tournament, reaching the 5th Singles semifinals before falling to eventual National Champion Randazzo of Gloucester CC. Two other key members of the men's tennis team at the National Tournament were David Wilkes (Hamilton, NJ/Hamilton West), who won his opening match at 6th Singles and Jason Ciaccio (Mercerville, NJ/Nottingham HS), who advanced to the 2nd Doubles quarterfinals with his partner McCaughan. Sophomore Joon Lee (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert HS), returned to the MCCC team this season following an All-Conference season in 2008 and was a positive influence for Coach Marc Vecchiolla's squad. The men's tennis team also had great success in the classroom, as Jason Bielski earned NJCAA Academic All-American Honors and sophomore Brendan Belluscio (Hamilton Square, NJ/Notre Dame HS), who will attend New York University next fall, was honored as an NJCAA Distinguished Academic All-American.
