Qasim Khan Named Head Women's Tennis Coach

Mercer women’s tennis will have a new Head Coach of its women’s tennis program this spring as long-time Head Coach Marc Vecchiolla is stepping down to a role as an Assistant Coach.  Qasim Kahn, who served as an Assistant Coach in 2024 for the women’s team is excited to take over the Head Coaching role, even if he has to follow an NJCAA Tennis Hall of Fame Coach.

Khan has known Vecchiolla for several years and was approached by him last season about the Head Coach job.  Khan viewed this as a great opportunity, especially with Mercer recently becoming a Division I program along with the top notch tennis facilities MCCC tennis has to train at.

While the jump from a Division III program to a Division I program has brought more competitive opponents, Khan aims to turn MCCC into a top Division I team. “I feel given Mercer's location and the tennis facilities we have, we should be able to recruit some top talent not just locally but internationally.  I intend to make Mercer women's tennis one of the top NJCAA Division I teams and have this program in the running for National Championships.”

Khan enters the Head Coach role with years of playing and coaching experience.  Khan was a top ranked junior tennis player in Middle States and played at Santa Barbara City College.  Following his time at Santa Barbara City College, Khan played in adult men's open singles tournaments and continues to play in local tournaments and USTA leagues.  While in California, Khan did a lot of local private coaching and coached briefly at the Fremont Tennis Center in Fremont, California.

While there are big shoes to fill in replacing Vecchiolla, the Vikings will be in good hands or should we say good racquets with Khan at the helm.
