Mercer County Community College women’s soccer not only has earned a national ranking in the latest NJCAA Division II Poll, earned its 12th win of the season and the top seed heading into the Region 19 Playoffs, but the program also reached its 500th win. The historic program win came on October 12th when Mercer defeated CCBC-Essex 4-0.
The Mercer women’s soccer program began in 1981 and has had nine different coaches and 16 All-Americans, including six two-time All-Americans.
The most wins in a single season for MCCC women’s soccer, 18 came under Bill Drake in 1987 and 1988. Mercer women’s soccer twice had 17 wins, in 1983 under Mike Angelotti and in 2008 under Jodie Ricciardi.
Shelly Dearden has the most wins in MCCC women’s soccer history with 138 in 11 seasons from 1995-2006. Drake is second with 116 in 11 seasons from 1984-1994. Dearden and Drake are the only two coaches in MCCC women’s soccer history to have over 100 wins.
Recently retired Elyse Diamond Elyse had 61 wins in 8 seasons from 2016-2022. Michelle Ogborn had 50 wins in 5 seasons from 2011-2015. Ricciardi had 47 wins in 4 seasons from 2007-2010. Tom Dolan had 18 wins in Mercer’s first two seasons in 1981-1982 and current Head Coach Ron Stinson has 16 wins with the 2023 and 2024 seasons and the 2024 season is not over yet with Mercer entering the Region 19 Playoffs as the top seed this week.
In a season which saw Mercer women’s soccer get their first national ranking as an NJCAA II Division program, it’s only fitting that the team reached another historic milestone, getting MCCC women’soccer 500th win in its 43 years of competition.
