2024-25 Women's Basketball Season Preview

MCCC Women’s Basketball is back!  For the first time since the 2021-2022 season, Mercer will once again field a women’s basketball team led by first year Head Coach Bob Fusik.

Fusik brings an impressive coaching resume and strong track record of success. Fusik spent four seasons as Head Coach of Trenton Catholic Academy Girls Varsity Basketball, compiling a 93-9 record from 2017-2021.  During this time, TCA reached the non-public B state championship three times, winning twice.  Fusik helped Trenton Catholic Academy to become one of the top ranked girls’ basketball programs in the state.

Fusik has the following vision for his program in 2024-2025: “Our goals and expectations this season are to have competitive performances and revive this historic program .We will be focused on player development and will create a pathway for players to improve on and off the court and potentially move on to higher levels. Lastly, community engagement will be important for us. We would like to establish a fan base by connecting with the campus and local community.”

Fusik expects key players for his team to include freshmen guards Ariadna Acosta Camacho and Alexandra Garcia Galan from Barcelona, Spain, sophomore forwards Lia Sekhniashvili and Carla Cancerrero Gallego from Madrid and Mataro, Spain, respectively, sophomore forward Jada Queen from Trenton Catholic Academy, freshman guard Zaakirah Edwards from Mastery Charter in Philadelphia and sophomore guard Gabriella Ross from Lakehurst, NJ and Donovan Catholic HS.

The 5’7 guard Ross is a transfer from NCAA Division I, UMass Lowell, who was a 1,000 point scorer at Donovan Catholic.

Edwards helped lead Mastery Charter to the Philly Public League Semifinals in her senior year.

Queen is a transfer from NCAA Division II Lincoln University, where she averaged 7.6 points per game and 6.8 rebounds per game.  Queen was named to the CIAA (Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association) All-Rookie Team in 2019.

5’11 forward Cancerrero Gallego is a transfer from NJCAA Division I Miami Dade College and 5’9  forward Lia Sekhmiashvili is a transfer from NJCAA Division I Miles Community College.
