MCCC Men's Soccer Win Northeast District Championship; Advance to National Championship

 

For the first time in seven years, MCCC men’s soccer is headed to the NJCAA National Championship.  Mercer won the Northeast District Championship on November 8 th by defeating Schoolcraft College from Michigan 4-1, in a game the Vikings hosted.

 

With the win, the Vikings will travel to Huntsville, Alabama for the NJCAA Division II National Championship November 17 th-23 rd.

 

Sophomore Diego Orquiz put the Vikings up 1-0 early in the first half, scoring off an assist from freshman Adrian Garcia Franco.  Adrian Garcia Franco scored off an assist from freshman Deniz Karcher to give the Vikings a 2-0 lead halfway through the first half.  A goal from Schoolcraft’s Kevaughn Harris, closed the Vikings’ lead to 2-1 until another goal by Orquiz on an assist from sophomore Manuel Alonso early in the second half.  Mercer sealed the win with a goal from sophomore Bastian Strunk off an assist from Karcher with just under ten minutes left in the game.

 

Mercer entered the District Championship, ranked 16 th in the nation (Schoolcraft was ranked 17 th) and have a thirteen game winning streak.
