Sports teaches us many lessons and mirrors life in many ways. But the important thing to remember at the end of the day is that it’s just a game. The results of any basketball or sports game are never more important than the game of life. The Mercer women’s basketball team learned this last week in a way they would never have imagined.
Mercer women’s basketball first trip to the playoffs in fourteen years began with an 80-62 win at Raritan Valley on Tuesday. The Vikings next game was a semifinal matchup vs Union on Thursday at Lackawanna. But the season ended abruptly and in the end all that mattered was that all members of the team were ok.
On the way home from the Vikings practice the night before the Semifinal game, some members of the team were involved in a car accident. Thankfully, all those involved are ok and recovering.
The coaches made the decision to not play the Semifinal game and end their season, knowing that even those who were not physically involved in the accident were mentally shaken and would be unable to concentrate on the game.
It was a difficult way to end the season and certainly not the way anyone would have thought, but at the end of the day, a game is just a game. Life is far more important and that lesson is bigger than any playoff win or championship the Vikings could have won.
