Women's Basketball to Face Raritan Valley in Region 19 Playoffs

 

 

Mercer women’s basketball will play in their first playoff game in fourteen years on Tuesday, February 25^th.  The Vikings enter the Region 19 Playoffs as the 5^th seed and will take on the #4 seed Raritan Valley CC.

 

Raritan Valley is the #4 seed with an 11-5 record in Region and 18-10 record overall and Mercer is the #5 seed with a 9-7 Region record and 16-7 record overall. The winner will take on #1 Union College, who 15-1 in Region play.  Harcum is the #2 seed and is 13-3 in Region play.  Lackawanna is the #3 seed and is 12-4 in Region play.  In order to qualify for the Region Playoffs, a team must either be .500 overall or .500 in Region play.   The Vikings lost at Raritan Valley 74-69 on February 18^th and beat Raritan 75-49 on November 21st.

 

Sophomore Gabby Ross (Lakehurst, NJ/Monsignor Donovan Catholic), who has several NCAA DI offers has returned from injury and is averaging 21 points per game.  Ross is not the only weapon for Mercer offensively as she is one of four Vikings averaging double figures in scoring.

 

Freshman Alexandra Garcia Galan (Barcelona, Spain) is averaging 13.2 points per game and 5.3 assists per game.  Sophomore Jhava Wilson (Trenton, NJ/Trenton Central) is averaging 11.5 points per game and 5 rebounds per game and freshman Zaakirah Edwards(Philadelphia, PA/Mastery Charter) is averaging 11 points and 4.7 assists per game. 

 

The Vikings have also gotten strong production from freshman Jayla Jones (Mount Holly, NJ/Rancocas Valley) who is averaging 7.9 points per game and 8.2 rebounds per game and sophomore Lia Sekhniashvili (Madrid, Spain / American School of Madrid) who is averaging 7.6 points and 6 rebounds per game.

 

While MCCC women’s basketball has done something they haven’t done in fourteen years, they are far from satisfied in this first season in three years.  The Vikings will look to bounce back from the loss at Raritan Valley last week at 5:00 PM and take the first step towards a Region Playoff win and Championship.
