MCCC Women's Basketball Nationally Ranked

MCCC women’s basketball is back as a collegiate sport for the first time in three years and the team has achieved something Mercer women's basketball hasn’t done in 25 years, earned a national ranking in the NJCAA Division II Top 25 poll.

The Vikings got off to a 3-0 start.  Mercer opened with a 30 point win at Harford (80-50) on November 4th.  In the Vikings’ second game of the season, MCCC won by 25 points, a 92-67 win vs RCSJ-Gloucester.  Mercer followed this up with a 46 point win at Cecil College.  In the Vikings first three games of the season, that’s an average margin of victory of 33.6 points.

The team features a high power offense that is averaging 83.5 points per game, 15th best in the nation.  The team is shooting 44.1% from the field, 19th best in the nation.

One reason for the Vikings’ high power offense is that they have multiple threats.  Sophomore Gabriella Ross (Lakehurst, NJ / Monsignor Donovan Catholic) is averaging 21.5 points per game, which is currently the 18th highest points per game average in the nation.  Sophomore Jada Queen (Trenton, NJ/Trenton Central) is averaging a double double: 18.5 points per game and 10.3 rebounds per game.  Freshman Zaakirah Edwards (Philadelphia, PA / Mastery Charter) is averaging 6.3 assists per game, along with 10.3 points per game.

Sophomore Lia Sekhniashvili (Madrid, Spain / American School of Madrid) is averaging 7.3 points per game and 7.0 rebounds per game and freshman Alexandra Garcia Galen (Barcelona, Spain) is averaging 14.5 points per game along with 5.3 assists per game.

The Vikings are also strong defensively, with the sixth best defense ball control in the nation.  Defensive ball control measures how well a team is able to disrupt the offensive team’s possession of the ball.  Defensive ball control factors in a team’s turnovers forced and steals.

Mercer will be facing some tough opponents including #4 ranked Union College and #13 ranked Harcum College which will be good early season tests for the Vikings.  One thing is for certain, MCCC women's basketball is back.
